depends on your experience and what your clients can afford. if you do a very good job but your clients pay you half of what you think your work is worth, then either find a new client or automate the work you do. If you feel like you dont have a lot of experience, I suggest to work harder for less money ;)

    depend on whats happening.....

    Are you buying or selling?

Buying........ then i would expect to pay up too $250 or more
for a quality & unique web directory.

Selling......... depends on your skillz and quality plus depends on # of sites being built.

    my view nothing more....

    thx

    Are you talking about:

    1) installing a script and a free template

    2) installing a script with a custom template and maybe some custom mods
    or
    3) scripting a whole new custom directory?

For 3), the sky's the limit but high hundreds to low thousands is probably your starting point. For 2) it depends entirely on the skills of your designer. And for 1), probably less than you pay for hosting it.

Most of these tasks come under communication: IMs, PMs, email, etc. Consider what you could do to streamline them. I would suggest cutting down the number of ways you communicate, so you don't have to keep looking at so many different channels, and also restricting the time you spend on this task to one specific time each day.

You might consider charging a nominal fee for number 11. People value things more if they have to pay for it.

You can't streamline it. not every client has yahoo, not every client has msn, not every client visits dp, not every client visits phpld forums, some dont visit at all and feel more comfortable in a voiced conversation. emails are detailed specifications.

I believe you're not understanding that there is no set 'mainstream' of communication when dealing with as many clients as i do.
    UNpossible (my word :))

On the other hand I am an easy client but my directory is evil  (not my fault)

Back on topic, if you are asking about skining a directory you are probably looking at the 300-400$ range, if you are asking about a custom directory script I would guess at least mid X.XXX

Have you thought of basecamp as an option? I haven't used it but I have heard really good things about it

There are several good support ticket systems that integrate with email that you could use Rob.
