How much server resources do forums take?

I have a simplemachines forum that doesn't have too much activity in terms of posting, however, the traffic is okay. It is on a VPS hosting with this configuration:

    Operating System CentOS Linux
    Disk Space 15GB
    Data Transfer 150GB
    CPU Resources 1000MHz
    Memory Allocation 512MB

My host has suspended the site saying that it is overloading server resources. It is supposed to be on a virtual "private" server! I moved to VPS from shared hosting less than 2 weeks ago. Now they want me to move to a dedicated server that costs more than double the money!

Is it really the treatment that I should expect?

Do you think small-medium sized forums can hog resources like that? I appreciate your views on this.

    Thank you

I was on a VPS for about a week before I went to a dedicated...it's expensive, but it's fast and reliable (sortof)

Members join for the site where some downloads are available and do not actively take part in the forum. The forum and site are bridged, so they become members in both...

Not sure about SMF but a forums should be able to be pretty big with those specs. You should be able to easily handle 5k uniques per day or more.

I have sitemaps loaded in Google. Does it matter, may be they are visiting too often! I have to check my awstats...
    Thanks for this tip.

That's reassuring... may be related to components that I have on my Joomla site. I am especially worried about the Joomla-SMF bridge.

Yeah that doesn't quite sound right... I haven't done much with SMF either, but there are ways that you can tweak the databases for pretty much any forums... Have you tried doing a search for topics like that on google or elsewhere? Anyone here done this with SMF before, or know a good site?

Not a whole lot unless the forum is big, but if you're using SMF, I believe you'll be fine on shared hosting for a while.
