Hi, How much of your traffic do you get from Directories? At last count, personally I seemed to be getting virtually none (the majority came from search engines, followed by direct type ins - though that could just be the industry I was in). (I'm interested to know as I'm building a directory and am wondering whether anyone will be interested in using it!) Thanks
I get most traffic from Google, then the other search engines, then a mix of direct traffic and referral traffic depending on the site...then at the very bottom is from web directories. The most I've got from a web directory is between 20 and 30 hits a month. To answer your question I wouldn't build a web directory unless it's in a niche that you really care about. If you do that then it'll probably provide some good resources for people in your niche and possibly get a following. If you're just going to build another general directory you'll have a tough time getting anyone to actually use it.
If you go to the Solicitations section, you'd see many directories being created everyday...on dropped domains, on jhfbgjbhe type domains on high pr silly looking domains that were never a directory. I personally believe that there is still market for directories, specially niche/local directories. If you are willing to invest money and time...and start from scratch and create something without following anyone else (good or bad) AND advertise accordingly, I dont see why people wont be using it... Content, relevancy and niche are some keywords for the future of this industry.
Even its the same in my case.... I get major traffic from organic search and possibly by other referring sites But not anything from directories... The problem with directories is that the sites with higher traffic features in the front which means they are going to get even bigger...traffic... In my case, traffic is not even half of them....so..no traffic from directories...
If you are going to put online just another mushroom farm dead on arrival directory, then don't hold your breath because no one will use just another "directory" from cesspool of 50,000 already shocking Internet. fastreplies
Thanks for the input - looks like it might be an uphill struggle getting folk to use a general web directory! I will need to think more about what can be done to set it apart from others.
Practically no traffic from directories. A couple of visitors from Blog Catalog, due to effort in networking.
My younger brother told me about this you click 6 adverts and then put the codes in and enter your site. He got traffic instantly after. http://www.fwebtraffic.com/?rid=1275987 Chris http://www.cmitsolutions.co.uk
I am not getting considerable traffic from web links directory, But script directory provides plenty of traffic to my sites.
As per my experience i found that a little bit of traffic from directories, since they are good in terms of backlinks to your site.
I tried this and didn't work for me at all. You must be one of the luck ones. it is a good idea but would be praising it even more if my site was seeing the traffic from this!!
I do not get any traffic from web directories. I guess there are only two directories you can get traffic from - DMOZ and Yahoo and my sites not listed in any of them.
Thanks for your feedback - seems like directories don't delivery much in the way of direct traffic when compared to search engines and other sources (ignoring the seo-links benefits). The most popular senders of traffic seem to be Dmoz and Yahoo (does anyone get much traffic from either directory.google.com or botw.org?) YMC and Mia (in a different post) also pointed out some interesting things - it isn't always easy to isolate traffic from directory sites in your stats, and while traffic from niche directories is often small it can convert extremely well.
now days directories are not giving traffic instead they are the only source of a single instance in the eyes of Google
