Don't worry about density too much. Rather targeting the right keywords and writing good unique content about it proves to work better.
Think about your site as a whole rather than just targeting keyword density.

Anyone saying anything above 5% density for your keyword is trying to get you marked as spam and punished by the search engines. A good primary keyword density is 3 - 4% for your primary keyword and 2 - 3% for your secondary keyword.

When doing your keyword research make sure that your first keyword is 2 words long, second keyword is 3 words long (contains keyword 1), and third keyword is 4-5 words long (contains keyword 1). A single word keyword is too broad and is not going to get you the targeted visits you're looking for.

As much as search engine needs to understand the page is about what? You have to just tell search engine what about your page is. You can achieve it with 1% density and as well as with 10% density. Choice is yours. But i would recommend to keep upto 5%, if you have some good link plans with you. If you are only relying on onsite factors then you can make up to 8% with content length upto 1000 words. If Content is more than 1000 words then gradual it little.

No way, you should be ideally looking around max 2-3% KW density, and try to use KW once in <h2> or <h3> tags in article body -it helps a lot!

I believe brainmasterinfo is correct. Google algorithm has been changed a lot. But I think 2-5% is perfect.

Personally I won't read content that has been written to contain "keyword density." I want good writing and good information and I believe that keywords should flow naturally from the content. If you must concentrate your efforts on keyword density, then write longer articles so that the keywords and their synonyms can be naturally spaced throughout the text.

3 - 5 % is the ideal percentage of the keyword should be use in the content. The content should not be filled with the keywords as it will be considered as spam. The construction of the sentence should have meaning of what you are trying to explain or give information in the content.
