How much is too much competition?

I'm still early in the game in SEO and am thinking of already revising my targetted keywords. Right now i'm targetting "ecommerce web hosting" which pulls up about 49,500,000 results at Google. If I target "affordable ecommerce web hosting" that narrows it all the way down to about 2,040,000. This is obviously a drastic change and might help me compete for top rankings.

But still, competing against, 2,000,000+ seems like a pretty daunting task. How much would you say is too much? Is it feasible to reach the front page for "ecommerce web hosting" through just time and effort and a fairly small budget? Or should I make the jump to a less competitive keyword?

People are hitting the front page for the first time on many different high traffic searches all the time. So yes indeed it's possible.

The question is... why not target both?

Hi PHP Gator, in such a field you gotta be really targetted. If you choose a certain area and go for it I'm sure you will do ok. Like in horse races you can't go looking side to side to see how close your competition is, just go for it and play clean and you'll probably outdo some of the zillions of spammers in that category real quick.

Write good content, do honest work and always put your visitor first place.

    Best wishes.

I say target what keyword will do best for you, don't let the numbers scare you away.

As long as you put your heart into your projects and you have patience, you can easily see your website rise to the top 10. Good luck! :)

    Hey there,

How much competition is too much competition?

Well, thats a question only you can answer.

If you select a very competitive keyword, it is obviously going to take a lot more work to get top results in the search engines.

If you want to start getting traffic sooner, then I would select less competitive keywords. Then, once you get some steady traffic, start migrating your keywords to be more competitive.

    Hope this helps.

    Sincerely,
    Travis Walters

If your site is new to the web you will come up for large key words but as the months go by you will loose visibility the reason is your site needs more PR"

Competition is going to be there in all the fields.
There is hardly any field which do no have competition and also provides good returns.
However, no cempetition is too much if you are competent enough to work hard and produce good results.
Use the keywords which has low competition so that you can rank high easily.
There are tools available in the market which can tell you which keywords have low competition so make use of those tools also.

I say target as many as possible. I just got a phrase that has 10 million results, and I now have the 3rd,4th, 5th, and 7th spots on the first page of google. The keyword gets an estimated 200 searches per day.

You just have to target the right words and then write as much as possible. I personally use articles to get better results, as I can't get my website to the top 10....yet.

Go after 5 key phrases and alternate between them every day. 1 for every day of the week. Or you could do 1 a week and then alternate, it's up to you.

I am finding out that you don't have to actually beat all 2 million, 3 million, or 20 million, you just have to try and beat those first 10 websites. Do that, and you will beat the other few million in retrospect.
