Directory submission can never be bad - the only question is 'how much is the link worth in traffic, PR and in anchor text for the SERPS?'

If it is no follow link then no PR is given from google.

If its on a high PR page with only a few out links then the PR leak is more.

If the link falls on a 0 PR page then only the link and anchor text is credited. But one day this page may grow some PR.

You could submit to 10,000 directories and get no traffic from it. But the engines may find these links and so you have a lot of one way links in with your varied anchor text.

Its only good for your site - but how good is the only question..

its not bad, depending on the quality. paid directories are better and will help your pagerank better.

    directories are not farms.

Farming is FFA link pages that have hundreds to thousands of links on the one page. Having ur link on these pages can hurt you but these arent used as much any more.

No importance whatsoever. When you see a PR7 directory, where the category is PR5 and sub-category is PR3, you submit your link in a PR0 page, which is worthless...

The only way I could see directory back links to work is if the page your actual link is placed on has PR rank. Obviously the higher the better. Directory can have pr of 10 and the page your link is on could have pr of 0. That link is worthless. It is possible that that page can get a higher pr in six months or so.
