How much is directory submission really important?

I remember manually submitting one of my web sites to 300+ directories a year ago. From then until now, I haven't received traffic more than 3 visits from each of these directories. And about pagerank, it doesn't really matter what the root domains pagerank is if you're placed on different page.

So what is the matter with directory submission? You don't get any traffic and you're not ranking any higher in google. Thoughts?

Directory traffic is not about getting traffic thats for sure. You should be able to get a tiny bit of pagerank I would say. Depends how crowed your niche is...

Directory submission gives you one way links that can give google an indication that you are reputable... A lot of webmasters are not doing it so you can be one step ahead of these guys.

Get some software that semi-automates directory submission too. Thats what I will be doing soon...

Many directories use no follow, so the link is not worth much...

I see you are new at DP. Welcome! Save yourself all that work, look at the buy sell and trade section here at this forum, you will find manual directory submissions for a few bucks, but I still am sceptical as to how much could it really help if not hurt your website. There are many reports about google discarding web directories. I for one believe in such reports as the basis of googles existance is to provide search results. Spammy sites can and will submit to such directories to gain exposure and backlinks and it only is natural that google will try to eliminate this.

Hmm.. I hope those are not the paid directories.

I think these directory webmasters are just trying to fool people into trading reciprocal links and by the directory webmaster having "no follow" he gets a lot of one way links.

YOu can use the firefox extension SEARCHSTATUS to highlight no follow links. I hope a lot of the free directories are not using them! I am about to buy "Submit Suite" for submitting to directories the semi automatic way...

yea I am new, but I have been a reader for way too long. Time to join the community!

I agree. I think the party is over and I missed the boat! If I were google I would eliminate those directories from my search equation.

I still am going to try to submit with some software that semi-automates this to lets say to the top 25-50 directories with decent pagerank. Will try to have them be one way links were they can have different anchor text on some... The software that semi-automates this helps you...

Just hate data entry and I don't like to reciprocate to directories unless they are good or in my niche... Don't want a useless banner farm in my blog sidebars or footers...

if the page no rank in directory, is really not make sense, but if the search engine can index this page, it is a little bit of help to ranking

Directory submission is important in link building. Remember there are lot of factors in ranking a website. Don't rely only on directory submission only. use other link building strategy and optimize your website(on page optimization)

directories are 100% NOT for traffic. buying a featured link will get you some traffic not a lot though.

Directory links are great for just building your PR and get your SERPs all the way to da TOP!!! :D

Keep submitting to directories and you will see results.... although there is a dead patch when you see nothing ahppening which will stop you from submitting but keep at it and it will get there.:p

Many of you who replied didn't read carefully what I wrote... I know directory submission did work at least a bit in the past, but what about the future. Google's delay in updating the pageranks is to high and I believe it must have something to do with updating their algorithm to detect "unnatural" links from directories. Google does not like paid links as we have seen with TLA. They only are for natural back links, people who like your website will link to you...

So the question is could directory submiting actually hurt your website?

Yes I have. Some of my site(s) have almost 80% of backlinks solely from directories. Do you know what are backlinks and how important they are?
