How Much is a 3 Letter Domain Name Worth?

Discussion in 'Domain Names' started by SEO-UK, Apr 4, 2009.

I was just looking at a domain name that's for sale and wondering just how much a 3-letter domain name is worth...?

I know it's like "how long is a piece of string", but what do you think http://afb.com would be worth? I know I can't afford it, but I am thinking about buying some short .com domain names in the near future, which is why I was looking.

    So, what do you think?

I'm surprised you're telling me such low prices. My tiny brain was saying "Oh at least $150,000".

#2 says they're lower than last year, which is natural because we are in a recession, but I probably thought they'd hold their value for uniqueness.

If I owned it I'd not let it go for less than 5 figures. I think I'd try to work it a bit harder somehow. Maybe now IS a time to look and buy.

You could call it an investment, but then again if you wanted to invest in a certainty, you could buy some gold - or even oil.

That's true, depending how bearish or bullish you are on those commodities!

It's just an idle whim really ... and I spotted afb for sale and just wondered.

hxxp://3character.com/priceguide.html (replace the x with the t b/c I can't post links) is an excellent starting point to get an idea of the industry average. Also, it of course depends on the letter combo too.

Well, the $12 million domain name was one of the first 50 domains ever registered.
You can't blame the nerds. :)

3 letters domains are selling link hot cake. but i can assure you that traffic is the first think you should consider when buying a domain! not the amount of letters.

i will pay more for a 20 letter domain if it profitable

t is worth the price the seller can get for it. 3 letters that mean nothing (afb)?
You keywords are your domain name. If you are selling coconuts, then buy a domain with the word coconuts in it. What are you going to use the domain for? What is the title of your site? Those are the words you should be buying in the domain name. What good is afb? What does it represent, 'all female bowlers', or what? Get a domain name that represents what your site is about.

Hi folks. I just stumbled across this discussion after Googling "AFB.COM" during one of my "find out everything I can" research pursuits. I'm not sure what it's worth, but I offered the owner $10,000 and he wasn't remotely interested. Was that a fair offer for something like this? I really want this domain and I thought the 10k was more than enough.

Your enlightenment in this area would be fantastic! Thank you.

If it's totally random it won't be worth much. but if it can be related to something or somebody who is famous you're in a GREAT position to make big money.

Well, here is a list of fairly recent three letter .com sales:

    POS.com - $250,000
    ANT.com - $241,000
    AHL.com - $207,000
    CPC.com - $200,000
    VIA.com - $157,000
    NHS.com - $151,000
    SSM.com - $145,000
    SPN.com - $120,000
    OTV.com - $110,000
    AMT.com - $100,000
    BCF.com - $71,200
    IAB.com - $67,250
    EFS.com - $55,000
    ACU.com - $52,500
    ABL.com - $50,000

Soo, judging by that list, I'd say it wouldn't be unreasonable if AFB.com sold in the five figure range. xx,xxx

All depends on the buyer. However, you just can't get certain domains (LLL.com for instance) under a certain price anymore. It just doesn't happen.

Entirely depends on what the buyer will be willing to pay. It is actually a function of demand
