How much I should ask for ads?

I have a web development blog where I write the web development tutorials. It gets about 4000 page views daily (around 2000 unique visitors everyday). So far I have not placed any ad on my blog, but now I'm thinking to put 125x125 ads on my blog. Can someone give me the idea how much I should expect for one 125x125 ad in the sidebar? Is it good idea to sell directly the ads or sell through the ad agency like buysellads.com?
    Please give suggestions. Thanks

I would start with Ad Sense and see how it does for you.

Yaro Starak, who is a professional blogger if you're not familiar, has a very simple formula...I believe he says take your DAILY pageviews and divide that by 10 and that's your monthly ad cost. I hope that helps.

Ad Sense would probably the best choice for you to start with - I agree with Lucky Jim

Well, of course use adsense, but it won't hurt to have a few ad blocks to sell

ninjamtlt1, superb advice, but I think these days it would be better to go for uniques instead of pageviews (eliminating bounces all together). $200 a month for 2000 uniques a day = everyone wins :)

    Thanks everyone for your reply.
@GoldSEO did you mean if I have 2000 unique visitors every day, the rate should be $200 for a month? If yes, for what ad size? Is it your personal opinion or is it a general rate? (Sorry, I am new to advertisement).

I'm not at the stage where I can sell ad space on any of my sites really, but have done my research. They say $1,5 for every 1000 visitors so that would put you at $3/day - if you go the BSA route maybe $100/ad might be a good rate? Just my two cents as I'm a novice! Like everyone else has said, adsense might be a good starting point.

Its great, It depends. But normally you can get $100 for 125*125 banner, and increase the amount if banner size increases.

I agree with some posters above. Try adsense first, see how much you can make a month on it. Then you can easily charge something close to what you have made on it.

Yes, go for Adsense. Even though your blog is about a certain niche, each posting will differ in topic and theme. With adsense you can display the most relevant ads to the post to the readers, thus get a higher click rate.

Another good option is CPM advertising where you get paid based on how many views the page with the ad gets. This is suitable for a blog, where you get a higher page views to visitors ratio.

I've tried Epom recently, it's free (like for 60 days or smth), and also it has many features... Like, I don't know exactly, but I think you should give it a chance. In other hand, AdSense is a good choice too.

Rather then thinking of charging a certain amount, I would think whats the incentive for me to continually pay you to advertise my website.

This can be reducing the price to continually maintain that cash flow, rather then hounding advertisers or hope for an inquiry.
