To be honest with you if you're asking this question then you're not good enough to do SEO any experienced SEO should know an accurate figure to charge for their SEO work.

I agree with willyboy104, If you have ability to get the client for doing SEO project, you should know what to quote? If you've no confidence to do the job, just leave the project.

I agree, I also want to say, that you do not know, which service you are offering and what will be included in your SEO package.

And for my ability am pretty good, we are 3 guys doing the job and now we planning to do freelancing work too. And friends we all are capable for doing any project and we are on no1 in google for majority of our keywords and those keywords are competetive too. You should charge on the basis of
    a. Your skill
    b. Your Experience
    c. The amount of time you would 'actually' spend on their site (so don't charge for 8 hours, if you only do 2 hours of work
    d. Check what are prevailing rates in your local area for similar work and then price accordingly.

Don't overcharge - you may end up making a good friend / long term customer
Don't charge too little - you would be taken for granted

It depends how much time you are looking to spend. I am not sure what the going rate is? maybe $15 an hour for an amateur, $30 for average, $50+ for a pro? I am guessing, go look it up and post it back here once you know

Ok don't listen to individuals like Shalwan ($50? Are you kidding me...)

    Base the compensation on the following;

hours rendered * quality of service (1 for low - 5 for high) + extras (misc. purchases i.e. software license) = $____

That is a quick formula that a large SEO firm billed me for 18 months of work.

Come off professional and don't be afraid to quote big if the project is big.

If you need any help with that shoot me a PM.

    Cheers,

Charge as much as you can, or you think the client might be able to spend, but you also must be confidence that you can take him to #1 in google.

The fair price for on/off page seo is around $3/page.
While for maintaining the seo ranking, its highly depend on the keyword targeted.

Some of the replies in this thread are just laughable - why do people answer if they have absolutly no experience in the subject?
If you're already working for an agency then you'll know what the agency fees are to clients - probably somewhere between $1000 to $7000 for initial audits, and between $800 - $7000 for monthy ongoing work. As a freelancer, without a track record of your own, I'd say halve that, but bear in mind you'll be expected to put the same amount of work in, and also have access to similar tools.
However, if you're planning to freelance while you are still working for your agency, you've got a potential problem there - they won't be very pleased if you're doing work on your own client in their time, or using their tools, contacts, research, or other resources.

he is not having experience and needs money so start with less and when you have clients run on hourly or project basis.
