hey yall the title says it all not sure if there is any one answer for this question but, what i would like to know is how much visitors can a server with this hardware handle. without crashing from high server loads # OS: Linux CentOS # CPU: Intel Pentium 4 - 3.0 GHz # RAM: 2 GB would like to get 20 thousand visitors a day to a server like that but am not sure if it would be able to handle that kind of load .would i need a dual core or would this one work just fine any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks
impossible to fully answer.. Depends entirely on your website (dynamic, static) and your traffic flow. Also depends on how your server is configured (whether you use cache software like memcache) to deal with the traffic, or the type of webserver you use.. Alot of variables my friend.. give us a bit more detail on your website. 20k a day on static would be fine. But I think dynamic site might have a problem.. of course don't take my word as gospel.. test it out yourself.
I hope you don't rate processors by the amount of Ghz, but anyways to answer your question there is no way anyone can really predict if that server can handle that load like previously said by darvil, you also have to look at your connection speed. But from the looks of it you should look into getting a beefier system.
20,000 visitors a day with how many page views? 20000 visitors is roughly 1 every 4 seconds. If you're taking longer than 4 seconds to generate a page, you're in trouble. Granted due to distribution of how people visit a site, it's probably best to divide that by 4, so during peak, probably 1 every second. It really depends on your resource requirements, and page views per person. That might change things.
you can get about 100k page views/day. because one of my friend has smiler dedicated server which is able to serve 100k+ page views/day
The reasons to upgrade that machine would include: 1) If the site is important and makes a good deal of money, that hardware is older and has a higher chance of breaking at this point. 2) The power required to run a P4 is fairly high. If he's paying for electricity, an upgrade might pay for itself very quickly with monthly electricity savings
Basically as mentioned by Darvil, it really depends upon the type of website you have too, that will be the key in all of this. If they are just static pages with minimal visuals, then I see now problems. having 20K visitors watching video certainly won't suffice on the box you mentioned.
it should easily handle 20k visitors, if the site and script you will be using is done properly, because if script or site content has issue, which contribute in server load, than it could be an issue, otherwise for such server 20k is very normal
