There can be a lot of discussion regarding the usefulness of DMOZ link from SEO point of view while some believing that is the magic bullet and other consider it only one back link but what is the monetary value of one DMOZ link. I think the value of a listing like any other product is what the market is ready to pay for it and since there are so many webmasters here, let's try to estimate the current market price of a DMOZ listing. I believe the price should be between $10-$50. What do you want to pay and why?
From what I've seen posted, the less informed are likely to pay the most. From past experience, I'd say there's little to no monetary value.
If it was nothing then Many of Admins and Metas wouldn't fight so hard to keep their gravy train going, would they? But if you like, there is an option for $10 or less which covers nothing and you can chose that.
My vote for $10 or less = nothing. Only for those of us who know the true price and/or value Annie. Only those with more money than sense would pay more. Unfortunately such fools exist...
I have to agree with Annie on this one, and choose the "nothing" answer. Anyone choosing to pay to get into a FREE directory needs to have their head examined.
pfff dmoz is in my eyes not more than any other link. First of all: you have to submit to such a narrow sub-category that most of these pages where your link will be placed have only PR 3-4 (sometimes less) and second of all, the directory is so huge that you barely get traffic from them. The only thing they are good for is to get spidered by the SE's quickly. And that's only the only thing you should use them for. It's better to submit to smaller directories like joeant.com, etc. They sometimes list you on a higher PR page and you get a little more traffic from them too. + they are also crawled daily by SE's So i would say, NOTHING! I've bottled some air once breathed by Princess Diana - $50 a go - anyone? I'm also selling sub-divisions of some acreage on Mars I have acquired legal title to - $500 an acre - good long term investment. What about some genuine Rolex watches - only $30 each?
Dmoz links are copied to google's directory & are found on hundreds of small-scale directories a.k.a "dmoz rips". So one link in dmoz does help & it is an authority site.
The links in the DMOZ clones are generally accepted to be discounted for ranking purposes. Again, proof of the negligable effect of a DMOZ listing is contained in the numerous established listed sites with PR0. The link helps but most webmasters report minimal traffic from DMOZ and its clones so a link from a much easier to get into free directory that is not so concerned about site quality and only about a reciprocal link and will do the link in a couple of days is probably a far better use of time and effort.
Good... but even for sites with quality content there's often a long wait period, and acceptance is at the discretion of the editor.
I am sure all editors are just waiting in line and count the minutes until you build your site, so they can list it.
