Effectiveness of the forum posting varies member to member, website to website and purpose of using it.
    1. If you use same niche forums then it is helpful for traffic and conversion as well.
    2. If forums give dofollow links then it can help to rank as well.
    3. Which forums do you pick for promotion also does matter.
For me: getting rank is 50% effective while for traffic 70%

Nicely done Kristina Roy. Thanks for your explanation.

webhelp1, I totally agree with Kristina Roy. If you don't know which niche forums you are picking to gain traffic and ranking then you are wasting your time. You will see great results in alexa if you choose niche forums wisely.

Forum helps in SEO basically in three ways :
    1) Knowledge
    2) Strong back links from Dofollow forum weblinks
    3) Keyword Ranking

If they are related, yes. Post in them, but do NOT spam. IF possible place a link in your signature with your secondary keyword for example, but check if the link is dofollow which will actually help you! ;)

To rank your forum post, make sure that your keyword must be present in your thread title and always follow SEO rules. But in order for you to get real traffic while doing forum posts, you simply had no choice but to give more value to the community. Spamming will lead you to nowhere. Always give value, and you will be rewarded one day as you are building good relationship with the community.

Forum helps when you choose related niche. It helps to gain direct traffic to your site if it allows dofollow link. Helps to improve rank as well if you get anchor text linking in your post.

If it is niche relevant you will get traffic, if not Google looks at you as an ambulance chaser and hates it. If it has high traffic and good trust factor then you can post once or twice without relevance as a new thread not in a reply, signature links are no good if forum or blog is not relevant and will catch up with you.

People talk smack on forum posting etc but i'll say this

Its 1 of our core methods we use
It has the highest conversion than any other methods
almost 30% of our total traffic comes from it

    WHY?

Your interacting with your ideal clients and your providing value

Sadly, no one cares about you or what you do, they care about themselves and what they can get out of it
Give it to them and your all set to succeed!
Build relationships and you have lifelong sales

I support your view ,Google work on quality content and keep it on top of search result. So joining a forum and posting your signature will not help you if you are not giving quality information to Forums .I have seen perfume niche webmasters posting in SEO forums just for their signatures ,and they will get nothing out of it

    Exactly right

People forgot what marketing and sales is, and just try to manipulate the tool instead

No follow or follow doesn't matter
Speaking to the right people will
Yes a follow link will help you rank higher, but either way, I would still post in a government forum asking for marketing advice for business, before I go to IGN and post with the hopes that my sig link will boost my traffic
    Some may come to it
very little would convert from it...

Go back to base principles and then see how to use those with the tools and resources you have available

Forum is useful in ranking as well as traffic. Use Forum only on those forum sites which gives do-follow backlinks for your website.

In my tests, relevance has little to do with juice/seo. DP and other forums have alot of trust and authority and will help your seo efforts.

Don't worry about follow/no follow and focus on quality sites/forums.

    Good luck

You can say that its the benefits one can get when posting on a forum, but it's not all.
A forum member can learn new things when communicating with other members, which could help both you and your site, in one way or another.

And to get the most of your forum experience (traffic etc), you need to be an active member.
