How much effective are "Referral Programs"

Hiye all, recently I have joined a "Referral Program" where you can easily generate traffic for your website. I was however wondering is it helpful in any way? I say this because ok i have increased my web traffic but it is somewhat through an automated system. Each day the number of sites i click on will be equal to the number of visits i get. But will it help in PR? or in anyother way? Please do let me know your reviews.

If you are talking about traffic exchange programs then I doubt they help much on page rank.

They don't help with PR or SERP in any way. They're pretty useless in terms of visitors too because they don't give targeted traffic so there's a very high bounce rate. It's a waste of time and effort. You're much better off building backlinks, doing social networking, and doing SEO.

well personally i also thought that the program was not of much help to me. Sure i got like 100-150 visitors per day but my site stats drastically changed, the average time on my website decreased and the bounce rate increased too. I am now back to good old link building, craig list ads and yahoo answers :)
I am still new to SEO so please if anyone can spare a few tips to improve my page rank, web traffic etc please do let me know.
