Fully depends, I don't charge by the hour. The highest rate by least time is when I write a SEO guide with recommendations. I charge $300 for that and it is maybe an hour work, maybe two.

Otherwise something like $120 per hour is what I am thinking at when working with SEO clients.

Most of my work is not with clients but on my sites and other things that will bring money in the future.

That's not the way to success. You need to value yourself and believe in your skills to a point where you are confident that people will pay a premium for your expertise.

Here is one way to answer this question.

Would you drive extra distance to save money on filling up your car?

If so, how much farther would you go and to save how much.

I saw a station selling petrol (we call it petrol in Australia) at 20c a litre cheaper. The average tank takes 50 litres. This means a savings of $10.00, yet there were people waiting an hour to fill up at this unbelievable cheap petrol.

What this tells me is that they think their time is only woth $10 an hour. I bet while their bums point south, they wouldn't take that from thier boss!!

I'm not a webmaster/seo guru full-time. I am a freelance photographer and run my own portrait and wedding studio.

I bill my time at $175/hour. On an average wedding, I'll work 15 hours (8 at the wedding and 7 offsite). After I pay my cost of sales (products and prints), I'll net $1600. So that's a little more than $100/hour. But on my average portrait client, I'll net $500 and work about two hours.

So, if I did the webmaster/seo thing I would have to charge so I wouldn't lose out on photography income.

Eh, i go around from about $20-$30/hr, depending on what it is actually.

I used not to charge by the hour and realize what i was doing.

Bah. Petrol in Australia is already dirt cheap. Last time I drove there I filled up a Nissan X-Trail for less than AUS$50. You'd have to take a loan out in the UK to do the same.

My billing depends entirely on the work I'm being asked to do. I've worked for as little as $7/hour doing something I enjoyed, wrote an article for Tech Central Station that paid only $325 for four days work and, conversely, billed $180/hour yesterday for tiresome scutwork (though it only took 20 minutes so I billed $60).

Some of these tax rates are strange. Even when I was full time in retail which is about 30k a year, tax was not quite 6k.

In terms of hourly rate. I guess it depends on your expertise and ability. Some of the prices in this services area are so low, theres no way I could do it full time and survive.

I have this problem all the time.

I don't really know what I'm worth. I've charged $60 an hour for logo design but the person was willing to pay me $200 based purely on my web site at the time. I declined and said I'll take $60.

I also find it distracting and annoying when some telemarketer calls me up and tells me I could save $50 a year if I change over to them, yet I say to them "If this takes me any longer than 2 minutes to do, then it's not worth my time! I'm not going to waste any more than 2 minutes to save $50 a year" and the person on the phone just doesn't get it.

I just thought of something else. How many of you here have been on the DMOZ forum? What gets me is the number of editors who say they are snowed under with URL's yet these same people will write pages and pages of stuff on the forum to defend themselves against impatient webmasters. When I saw that I just thought My god! There's certainly no concept of time management or priority there!

Usually around $80/hr on contract, $150/hr without contract.

Emergency service can run someone up to $350/hr.

A client wanted to give your a raise and you turned it down? Maybe this client was telling you something about the bigger picture.

I just hang up on them.
