How much do search engines take into account your URL for SEO?

I am launching a website in a few months and I was wondering if there is a way to estimate where you might rank in search engines compared to competitors. For an example, if people were typing in green cups into search engines and my domain name was greencups.com, would this ensure I would be ranked number one on a search engine? In niche markets, if you are selling a product and only that product, SEO should be pretty natural if done right??

if you have greencups.com and your site is about green cups, it won't take much effort or time to get it in the number 1 position for the keyword green cups. no matter the competition.

It certainly does help to have keywords in the domain. I registered "newyorkcemeteryrecords.com", and within days of launching a website, it ranked at #2 on Google for the same keywords "New York Cemetery Records". But of course, that's a long tail keyword, and there's little competition for that traffic. But since then, it fell in ranking to the second SERP.

So having keywords in the domain helps with SEO, but I think it helps even better for the visual appeal. I think people will be more likely to click on that search result, just because of the domain, even if it came up at #5 or #6.

Thanks guys! It does make sense that people are more willing to click on a website who's domain is the same as their keywords. Do you have any tips on picking keywords when using SEO? Is there a way to find out how your website would position in search engines compared to competitors?

There is no tool that can tell you how a domain would rank on Google. Obviously, only Google knows that would work.
