How much do directories help?

    How much do directories really help? Can't you get penalized by Google for using too many directories.

    Your site will not get Google penalty for submitting too many web directories,
    but you need to select the quality/SE friendly directories to submit to.

    Yes, be selective. Do not submit your link to PR0 and alexa 3 million directories :) There is no sense to submitting them. It is important to have quality backlinks.

    Occasionally, I take some odd SEO projects (besides my own sites/blogs) from clients at very cheap price just to check the value of directories. I am on such a project right now --

    Main Keyphrase was on #195th when I took up. He wanted some other keyphrases too which relate to sub-urls as the site is an eCommerce and sells something.

    My first job was - to submit to free directories announced on DP (I know they are very short-lived) -- the campaign brought me to 89th position.

    Then I added the site to my own directories (have 11 of them which are more than 2 years old - but added to only 7 of them) -- it brought me to 21st position.

    I, then wrote 3 blogposts - and posted them on my own blogs -- also started submitting to quality directories.

    After just 3 weeks - the main keyphrase is now @ #4th position on Google and other phrases are on top page too.

    Directories do help immensely in SERPs -- one just has to know how to use them and have a long-term plan to use them.:cool:

    And NOOO - you will not get penalized by Google if you know how to use them. :)

    Submit in high Pr directories you get result surely, but High PR directories take a time for approval..

    Directories are good for 'local keywords'. Increasingly any keywords with relatively high competition won't work.

    Yeah, I've found that directories will help you rank for long tail keywords pretty fast. They'll help you rank for more competitive terms after you've got other links for those terms.

    Bottom line, directory submissions should be just one part of your overall link building strategy.

    Directories should be related to your website. example adult-to adult, and so on. google will not penalize for this. Directories will help you to achieve your SEO results a lot faster.

    Directories do help in providing quality backlinks, but choose a reputable one and one that is human edited. Remember, Web directories are always on the menu list of SEO.
