yes, your friend is right! Your website needs a redesign.. when I visited your website, I closed it within 3 seconds because there are too much things present and not properly laid out.. so to hold back your visitors u need to have a pleasing design.. thats my 2 cents
I agree with kferguson. You can't visit a website, where you don't understand what's there. Take a look on it. How could you find something in that mess?
If you don't want to reduce the amount of content then you need to try and separate it a bit more, so it dosent all blend together.
That site definetely needs a redesign. The graphics and effects don't need to be too fancy but clearing up the layout would result in better usability which makes the site more appealing.

Yes, the site needs a redesign. Site needs more white space and web 2.0 colors. The site has to many links... it's like a link farm.
Looks like you have lots of good content in your website. but, it is difficult for the user to go through and find out what he needs. make it easy for end users.
Design is VERY important. I suggest you do as much as possible to get the design much better, the better the more traffic and offical members.
Your design looks very 90's... You really need to update it and give it a modern look. But to answer your question... design is fairly important as far as retaining visitors goes, but at the end of the day - content is the most important thing. A good design is worthless without good content. You need to find a balance between the two.
The design with the content will let the viewer bookmark your page and then you'll popular in a way they did bookmark it or maybe share the link to their friends that is why design & layout is very important to any one website

I'd say that it really depends on your website. If your website is something unique and something people would only go to your website to get then the design isn't too important (although it's usually better to have a nice design, if not for anything else than getting people talking about it). But if your site isn't unique (and yours isn't - how many other sites out there sell what you do?) then design is really important. If the design is good then people will generally revisit your site and/or look around the site more. I know someone who owns a business selling things on his website like you do and after a good re-design their pageviews went up by about 100% and sales by about 20% within the first month (and rising he tells me). Also by looking at your website i'd say a re-design would really help. At the moment your site looks very crampt (everything is quite close together and not very structured). A good re-design would make it much easier to navigate not to mention be more pleasant on the eyes - i'd guess it'd make people more likely to come back to your site.
not true to full extent but they will remember your site i dont even feel like using it when i got to your site it has to many words
The visitors wont come back just because your design looks very nice... They will come back coz they can memorize your design.
fancy graphics are not always necessary but design is ALWAYS important because it tends to say something about your professionalism. Google is light on graphics but still sports a solid design.
