Short version: A video game blog takes awhile to monetize. Once you have steady traffic coming in it does get a lot easier. If you have the content that will make people keep returning to your site and a high volume of traffic there are quite a few ways to start earning a profit off of a blog.

For a video game blog I would go with the following 3 options once you do have the traffic:
    1) Video game related affiliate links where you have your advertising banners on the side. (One suggestion would be http://www.splitreason.com who sells quite a few video game related shirts.)
    2) If you get big enough you can get sponsored links from publishers though you need to have a lot of traffic and name recognition to get to that point. (Also if you get to that point you can usually talk them into sponsoring contests at your site which, while it doesn't make you money will encourage visitors to keep coming back and in the long run will work out for you.)
    3) A lot of people swear by Google Adsense (Though I 'personally' don't believe that it's the best way to be monetizing your traffic.) If you go this route just make sure to not cover your page in it as that will deter your visitors from returning to the site. (It works in some cases but the video game niche is huge and there is always other places to get news and articles from.)

Honestly, with the video game niche, until your getting 500+ unique views a day (which is low for this target market) I wouldn't want to go overboard with attempting to make money. It's patience that will get you to this point and whatever you do. DON'T start trying to put in affiliate/marketing links for things that gamers will have no interest in. Please. :)

how much you can make is a direct function of how much work you put into it.

Exactly, you can make nothing and thousands but don't expect to do it overnight.

Basically earning potential depends on how much effort you are willing to put in and develop your blog. It's about traffic that we are talking about here and how you can convert the traffic into dollar and cents.

Get an autosubcriber account and place an opt-in box on your site. buy an interesting MRR product for your niche and start building a list. Promote your site and do some tests with this to see which promotions work best.

Place simple PPA banners on your blog, start posting quality posts and combine them with affiliate posts and promote these post like crazy.

This is the short version; making a living from your blog isn't a short process. You have to manage your blog as a business 7 days per week, day after day, month after month.

It will take hard work but it's really up to you. You have to be patient as well. Write with a passion on your blog and update it often and you will be able to make at least $100 per day.

No problem and glad to help! I used to run a gaming blog and have worked on another so while I know it can be difficult if you get it going properly it can not only be a lot of fun (for gamers) but turn a profit as well. Patience and content that keep readers coming back is the key for a gaming blog. :)

With proper content, with proper traffic and with proper sponsors or ads in place you can earn a lot.

You can also try contacting the gaming companies and their PR's ;)
