    Hello all,

I am thinking of learning web-site design as one of my hobby and I would like to know what is the average income of designing website. What is the price they usually charged to hire people to design their website. What are the programs that I need to learn to start designing my websites?

    Thanks a lot,
    David

It all depends on several things, these are a few big ones:
    1) How good you are at graphic design
    2) How good you are at selling yourself
    3) How much you can charge

#3 is a sticky one. Most people want more design than they're willing to pay for, and you have to know when to say no and not devalue your work just because you want the work, though at the same time you have to be competitive. If you can find a niche, then you're good and can make decent money. I know a guy who charges big money for mediocre designs which he does in 2 or 3 days, but he can get the site highly ranked in a month or two with highly desirable search terms; I've seen him do it.

So what can you make? A decent living. But don't expect big money unless your work attracts lots of attention.

Like said above, it depends on a lot of things.
But generally, if you start your own "Company", you can make tons of money (if you're good of course).

I'd suggest you start with HTML and CSS, and Photoshop, for the "Design" part.
You can use Adobe Dreamweaver as an editor, it is the greatest.
After you learn the basics you can even throw in some PHP, which is important.

Most people that want a "Simple" site for their business, would ask a Web Designer to create it from 1 to 100%. Meaning they would want you to make a Feedback or Contact section which will include some PHP or ASP, this will require you to know a little bit of programming, but not as a professional because you can always download scripts and sources from sites on the web to help you.

Most important thing is to know what you want and know how to do it. This means you have to study hard on HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Photoshop as a starter.

This is only my opinion of course, but there are many other programs you can use.
Creating a Web Site nowadays is much easier than it used to be. You don't have to make a .txt file and write all the HTML yourself.
You can even specialize in Wordpress, many people just want someone to create a Wordpress site for them.

    Goodluck

No one can figure out this, because we don't have any idea about your designing. It depends on your designing skills. If you are a good designer, then you would earn enough money.

If you are a skilled web designer, you can make a lot of money! You can design websites for companies, create website templates and sell them on sites like ThemeForest or create free wordpress themes and sell links inside them!

The most important thing is how you market yourself. if you market yourself as a freelancer offering low cost services you will only get people who want cheap stuff. Whereas you can market the same services to corporate clients with a professional set up with a company and office etc you will charge more.

    Hi David,

Pricing can vary depending on web design projects, time and effort needed to complete work, complexities, and your expertise on a given task. You might also want to check on other web design services online for pricing guidance. Hope that helps! :)

You can earn a lot more if you stay off websites like this one. I remember I use to come here and earn about $100 for entire website. It was ridiculous. Plus you wont learn much here. If you become an established designer or developer you can make 1000s per project depending on scope

The market is pretty jam-packed but there is still lots to do. A must do techniques are HTML+CSS to begin the adventure. This is the base for any further self-development. The more you get specialised the higher chance to find a job and better paid at the same time. PHP, ASP, dJango, CMS developing, fron-end developer, mobile devices developer are only few of many ways to go. Just pick one and master it. I don't recommend staying at html only. It might be very hard to compete with enormous amount of beginners. Oh, one more thing, even if you are not an artist it is always good to have some basics of Photoshop or Gimp.

In my opinion, before you start your own business in designing websites, you must firstly learn all necessary languages like html, css, javascript, this is just basic, and then server site languages like php. Also you must learn some graphical applications like Photoshop or Fireworks for designing any graphics and images you will use in your websites. Afterwards you must create few websites and then you will see how difficult is for you. Practice and experience is essential for website creating. The most difficult as I experienced myself is matching right colours for the websites. You spent a lot of time to learn it properly!

    Hi David.

I have to agree with most of the posts above that it takes time to become a successful web designer. You have to practice everyday and read up on the latest design techniques in the business for starters. Searching for popular blogs that deal with web and graphic design will help in your journey to becoming a web designer.

The tools that are used are varied but these the most popular:
    Adobe Photoshop
    Adobe Illustrator
    Adobe Dreamweaver

And to answer your last question, that really depends on what kind of work you can actually do. You'll have to build up your portfolio and get people to critique it to get an idea of what kind of prices you should charge.

    Good luck with your quest.

Pricing really depends on your talent, skill and knowledge. Becoming a professional designer takes time and you have to put in a lot of work learning all different areas of design, of course there are some designer who will only take on small uncomplicated sites, but obviously that limits you to the jobs you can take on. the more you know the more you can earn.

Yes, I agree, matching color is what artists do, coding is what engineers do. It's easy to be an engineer but hard to be an artist.

That's why it is so difficult to be a good website designer because you must be good code writing and also be an artist.
