    I don't think the number of backlinks determine your position in searches. There got to be other factors too. A lot of pages on my site having fewer backlinks do appear in the top 10.

    It depends on your niche and on what keyword you are trying to get on search engines top page. For a lower ranked keyword, you'll need fewer backlinks but for a high ranked keyword you'll need lots of backlinks.
