    Back links are important. But you should search your ranking first, where your site is stand for form a specific keyword. and pick 5 or 6 some specific keywords and back linking on them. That should be getting more positive results for your site.

    It depends on the popularity of the niche you are trying to rank in and the volume of competition for those keywords or phrases.

    if you target a keyword in niche area, such as writing about a certain writer, you dont need a lot of backlinks to get high ranking.
    if you aim for "how to make money" as keywords, then with even 500 backlinks to that particular blog, you still will not rank very high.

    It all depends on the competitors. Sometimes you need just 20 PR1 backlinks to be top ranked.

    Its not based on the number of back links but the quality that you are creating. Google gives more value on the quality compared to those irrelevant sites that you are getting. Quality is better than quantity right?

    Hi, well first of all the number of backlinks matters but the quality matters a lot as well. You need to get more quality backlinks and also it's better when it's on ur niche. So it gets better on search engines eyes.

    how many your competitior backlink and the backlink quality..
    If your competitor only have backlink from 2 site with pagerank 3, you only need the same plus 1 link from site with pagerank 1.

    Some pages of my site have pr 2 and 0 backlinks. Other a few pages still have pr 0 with 50 and more backlinks at all.

    its not only about backlinks to get good ranking, its about content, design, tags, seo, time, age, keywords, there are many factors involved in a website to achieve good ranking....i have seen sites that have thousands of backlinks and are ranked on far far pages, and i have seen sites with just a hundred backlinks that are ranked #1

    "It Depends". We've been able to simultaneously rank #1 and #2 out of 1.3 million pages with like twenty PR0 and PR1 backlinks ...but it was because nobody else we were competing against even made a remote effort to optimize.

    A good place to start is to look at how many backlinks your competitors have using Yahoo Site Explorer.
