Use every method you can get your hands on! Even the small stuff counts.

Make an outline of FREE advertising methods. Everything you can think of...

    -Social Networking
    -Social Bookmarking
    -Search Engines
    -Direcotires
    -Word of Mouth
    etc.

And then a list of Payed methods:

    -PPC
    -Paid directory submission
    etc.

    Then look at your budget.

Try out the free methods for sure. Try out the paid methods that fit your budget and then monitor each method. Go from there.:)

We have, and of course it is going to be about how well your company web site product has a call to action something we had to learn the hard way before our latest updated web site product was re-released as it has been running and selling email marketing services since 2005.
We use placed advertising and are (we tried it) PPC shy. Today the placed text and banner style advertising that we buy direct from other web sites and blog articles of course seem to really be paying off in the ROI (return on investment) for us.
The catagory for our services is heavy with compitition so agian it really depends on what you are selling and how much you are selling for to if this is going to work for your company and product.

You have to be careful to ensure you can recoup what you spend with PPC so make sure you set daily budgets and work out what your conversion is and what you max PPC cost can be for getting quality traffic to your site to convert.

I've just given up on stumbleupon. I was only spending $5 a day, and got 100 visitors a day, but the average time spent on the site was only 9 seconds, and the bounce rate was 94%.

I've also tried facebook, but the results aren't much better.

Sadly, I've gone back to google adwords.
