How much affect would this link have?

    Hi there,

A friend is willing to give me a link on the front page of his website. There are only 11 other links on the page and mine would be the only external one.

The PR of my friends page is only 2 at the moment but he expects that to go up in the next update since the page itself has in the last month acquired 8 quality links from pages (not just domains the actual page) with PR4-6. These pages all have around 30 external links each.

I don't want to give the urls of the sites here but I can assure you that they are all totally above board. I've checked the PRs are all real (info:) the links to him are from well known institutions and the pages passing the links are old.

His site is from 2005 and is a huge local history website with several databases (which is how he managed to garner such valuable links) which he's always owned.

The anchor text I wish to use is "irish gifts". Currently I rank between 6th and 17th (depending on the day) for that term. My website is www.traditionalirishgifts.com I've read several books and this forum and done onpage optimization as best I can which has got me to where I am now

Can you tell me what I could expect to happen if I get this link? Would it be enough to land me top?

One link alone really makes no difference unless it is from a PR7+ authority site. Most links building campaigns "sink or swim" based on the overall strategy, not just a few links.

A single link will not cause a PR jump but if I were you, I would try to forget about it and work on to get more quality links. Another thing to note is that make sure it is related to your niche or else it won't make any difference.

The link is from an Irish history site, I'm an Irish gift site, does that cover the same niche? More or less?

It's not the only link I'll have built. Since May I've been gathering links on Irish related forums (low PR pages) and from blogs (high PR pages with some/limited relevance)

Links have risen from around 200 to 1400 (according to google) from a wide range of URLs with varying PRs and varying relevance.

I've gotten myself from about 56th to average about 10th in that time with what i've learned about onpage SEO and these links.

This would probably be my most potent - in terms of potential PR and number of other links on the page - one so far, would it not just amplify the effect I've had so far?

    thanks
