I stopped spending money on links, trying to generate organic links is usually more rewarding (harder, but rewarding)
Yeah I spend about $300 per month or more, I really do not keep track I just buy anything I see that is worth the money. I have a question to those who do not spend a penny. Do you know of any sites that have ever been successful without spending any money?
Interesting - so, your time is worth nothing? I think it probably is - so you need to consider that as part of your budget for obtaining links. Be it links "purchased" or links created organically - there is a cost.
I don't spend any money on links since my site is more of a hobby. Most of my links are organic, link exchanges and free directories.
I did a search on all my main keywords and the majority of the results on the first 3 pages are big players in the game, companies you have heard of if you are in the industry and I know they spend $$$ on advertising. Just sitting there and waiting for people to naturally link to you would take years. I would rather just spend a few hundred bucks and try to work my way up the search results.
I'm spending around 1000$ a month right now on links.. but i have 3 websites that i'm just starting to market. Soon i'll have two more, so that just going to keep getting bigger. I also end up paying people to write content which i can use as link bait and such so altogether i'm spending around 2000$ a month now if you include link bait.
my sites are showing up for more and more of our targetted keywords every month. We've just stepped up to this level of spending though so its going to be a wait and see kind of thing. My new site "expat medical insurance" is already outranking the other sites we own for some of our keywords, and thats within 2 weeks of it going live. On yahoo its ranking in the top 20 already for the keyword phrase it was created for "Expat Medical Insurance". With that kind of ranking in a short time i hope to get much higher within 6 months or so, at least on yahoo. So i think its worth it. I try to never buy any links that look like spammy links, I buy links within content and links in quality directories.
I guess it depends on how competitive your niche is. I have been able to get to the first page for my keywords on all se's without paying for links. And, my main keyword has around 83 million results so it is fairly competitive. It also depends on how many links your competitors have.
I really believe you can only get so far without spending any money on marketing. For many years, I have preached guerrila tactics for generating traffic. But unless you are offering something very unusual or amazingly special, you will need to spend a few ducats on marketing to get to a new level.
Personally I haven't spent anything on link building and this is probably why I never crossed PR4. Just once when 1 site "unfortunately" got PR5. My search listings are also not for my most sort out keywords, but for really unexpected ones. Basically whatever I have is from directories, some related sites of mine, articles which some kind blogging people found useful and used, Some people say that buying links does not help. Although I can very well see people making it to search results with their "text link ads" placed all over! Im also considering buying some after this PR update...Not sure, but can't seem to find a better solution. Bye
I guess I view buying links and marketing two different things. Buying links to me is paying $ for your link in a directory or for a link on a high PR site. Just purely for the link and PR effect with no expectations of receiving traffic/customers from that link. Adwords or purchasing a link on a high traffic site related to your business model, on the other hand, is marketing/advertising, which to me is not the same as buying links. Because with these types of links, targetted traffic is expected. So in a sense you are not just buying a link, but you are buying traffic as well by promoting your site. But, yes, I suppose technically they are the same, but in my mind I always separate to two.
