Yes meta tags are important for a website. If you have fully optimized your website's meta tags then search engines will prefer it in search results because when crawlers visit a website they crawl from top to bottom and they found meta tags they will definitely pick your website for its relevant query

What is important about the meta tags is they tell the spiders what the page is about. When a spider first hits a site it reads the title / meta tags first (or near enough).
