Few days ago I opened a discussion about meta keywords and descriptions. Most experts replies that "Keywords aren't much important as google doesn't look at that at all; However, meta description is still one of the major factors." Well, now I need a suggestion from you guys, how my meta description should be. How long and how descriptive it should be? What it should contain and what not? Waiting for experts' suggestion. Thanks for your time... Regards
Your meta description is not an SEO consideration, it is for marketing purposes. As a result, it should be catchy and attract peoples attention and of course be descriptive. It is an important factor in why folks click on your link but it is not related to rankings. The point is placing keywords in it has to do with the fact that folks should be looking for said keyword or phrase if you will. hope that helps, Nigel
Well, as you said that google will not look keywords and description is still major factor. I think you should write your keywords in your description instead.
Well if you analyze the top for any keyword you will see that sites with good meta tags rank much higher than these without it. So no matter what others say it still play big role in good ranking.
I didn't got ans of how long the meta description should be, is there any length limit or best practises etc.. Regards
I think it should not be more than around 20 words because keywords weight and density issues in meta tags. According to an article Google display up to 160 characters in your SERP snippet. Yahoo! goes up to 165 characters. And MSN will display over 200 words. You don’t want to go beyond the smallest number, 160. Keep it short. as far as ranking is concern google does not use meta tags when ranking website.
