I have a re-seller account at HostGator and about 13 related websites, they are all sports teams. So I'm wondering how many websites can be all linked to each other on the same IP address before any of the search engines start to take notice and think something funny is happening?
It's not when they take notice, but how much faith they put into same-IP links. Probably extremely little. Don't count on them for any real PR boosting (to/from the same IP).
My concern is not how much PR help I'll get, but will those sites actually start to get penalized for having too many same IP links? I don't care if the links aren't worth much (even nothing), just don't want negative effects.
There's wouldn't be any negative effects (being penalized by the SE's), if that's what you're asking. Just the link itself wouldn't count as much as one from a diff. IP.
I have a re-seller account with hostnine....free dedicated IP's for all sites! Google doesn't like too many sites with the same IP. If there is a bad name for one of the sites, there will be a bad name for all of them.
Thanks MrX, that is what I wanted to know. I looked at hostnine when i decided to go with hostgator. It looks like hostnine offers 2 dedicated IPs for the smallest reseller package. A dedicated IP for each website seems a bit unrealistic on a reseller account with no restriction on number of domains. Isn't it?
Hey Kidpurple, great question, no real penalty, just no real credit. I would recommend hosting at different places with different IP's if you are serious about it. Unfortunately it is a higher cost, but appears more "natural".
