How many pages do you need for your website? Prices vary from freelancer to freelancer. What I do is build all of my sites by myself (which cuts down costs a lot) but if you are considering getting your site designed, as the freelancer about any bulk orders ;) (I offer huge discounts on bulk orders).

For an adsense site.. I wouldn't pay more than $10 a page..

Same for me. I actively work on two, another is in limbo right now. I am aiming to build up a few decent earning sites in the future.

I own 7 sites, but they are small and pointless. I am launching a really big site soon.

I don't know wht you need to pay $300 to set up a site.
Why don't you invest a little money in buying a html book? or visitng a few of the many html tutorial sites; just do a yahoo search. It will save you money in the long run?
If you don't want to go down this route, then try a blog eg blogspot/wordpress or use a content management system such as mambo or joomla.
