It depends upon the specification of the VPS you add. If you add 1 GB RAM in each VPS then you end up with 7 VPSes max.

    RAID10 - Google it.

It will cost a fair bit, i suggest you research servers a little more before running into a VPS provider company.

You will need a large amount of investment to continue business for 2-3 years.

I allready googled this for you in another thread. I posted a few links about what raid and the levels are about. Here is your thread again:

    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1299858

Raid cost depends on every provider. usually you pay for the card and you pay for 4 identical hardrives.

Depends what RAID your getting, if its a hardware controller they will setup that for you.
Chances are you will run out of RAM before power on that server.
I host on Q6600 - 8GB RAM servers and they run fine with about 12 vps's on. also they are really good price for me.
You also need to work out if your overselling or not, some hosts do some don't
Personally I don't agree with it, but you can get alot more VPS's on a server if your not that bothered about the end users performance.
    Your Choice.

    about cost
if you want to save on cost - then you get a blank server and YOU do ALL the raid config server config, etc and all else on your own
that however requires quiet some in depth knowledge and experience - IMO at least a few years practice on own offline server system, own PC and own site-server before going into such business

else your server-host charges whatever there fee - up to 100+$ per hour to have your host configure your server as you like it

    or
    you take a managed server
and pay hundreds of $ per months or much more and have the solid disadvantage of life long waiting time for every bit you want to configure or change

it's much more than just RAM / GB and bandwidth / selling accounts
a very substantial part of a server admin - may be the most time consuming is security and hacker / IDS / IPS system config and maintenance

example during the past several holidays ( holy week ) I had hackers from far in excess of 100 different servers attempting to knock at my servers. why ?
because many hobby server admin / owners are on vacation and hence no or very limited supervision of all server activities.
these are the days you loose or maintain your reputation as a responsible and reliable server admin.

to be server owner / admin means 365 days / yr / 24 hrs /day on duty or on call and in control

you can simulate all offline using LAN IP or if only 2 PC involved connect directly by cable PC to PC at home without routers or wlan

best having 2 PCs at home
    one simulating your home-PC
    the other simulating your www-server

connect via cable or wifi and configure ALL as you wanted to do online
any good Linux OS offers all the tools and SW you need for LAMP and accessories/services on server

I have never used VMware - hence no experience,
but I always fully install SAME OS in my laptop as I have for my server - incl same version
that gives me exact offline situation as my server encounters
which may be important during regular security fixes and updates
first I do offline - if all fine after update, then I do online on server

just study the functionalities and services you want to offer on your server and create the exact same at home
as a server-simulator you may use an old PC without monitor - just HDD or raid
NO touching, NO switching etc allowed at home
in normal remote server management you have NO switch, NO direct physical access, all via SSH and shell commands and in emergency a rescue console for a hard-boot. that.s it.
such situation can be simulated offline if you want.

I run opensuse ever since I moved to Linux in 1998.
    NO experience with Centos
    but
since YOU choose Centos, you actually should be able to find those data within your own system or by google.for

    Centos LAMP

but as far as I know ALL major dist have LAMP and all necessary server tools included in their dist packages.

any testing environment as direct as possible is fine for our "home work"
I would the most direct connection
like cable PC to PC or switch
and your "server-PC" should have direct access to www, just as your server usually has direct access to internet to download missing SW

in a typical server situation you get a basic image pre-installed
    login
and do all the rest remotely

hence you could install a basic default LAMP
then login and do as in real server-world when all is done remotely by you

all via SSH - NO remote desktop stuff
while many use a cpanel of anz kind
my recommendation is to use direct console, its more secure and more flexible but also more demanding at beginning

later when you know what you do, you always can switch to any cpanel
because THEN you know each step the cpanel does and can correct where needed

I install Cenos 5.3 and setup using a tutorial in the net and when i restart i got a login terminal to the server.

I add there my root username and password and it was ok.

Then i try using local ip to connect from my windows pc using putty and i got a prompt :)

But when i add my username there and pressing enter i got this:

by default normally remote login as root is disabled
hence to be able to login as root you may have do enable root-login FIRST

that most likely will be in your
    /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    a line>

    PermitRootLogin without-password

    or
you create another user account - then login as NON-root user
    and then su after login
later you may configure your root login - but together with serverkey authentication rather than password

    and
make sure you have NO interfering firewall on any of the machines

    and
you may have to learn to google to get faster answers to your problems
maybe you appear to lack even normal Linux user experience ???

make sure you know how to configure regular network before starting remote server
it is same as networking except more security and more configuration/installation stuff to do

i would use Linux on BOTH ends of the test to make things simple and solid

A general rule in case of ANY problems,
on BOTH machines always look at the error logs - any of multiple of below, depending on exact operation / problems you encounter

    tail -f /var/log/messages
    tail -f //var/log/warn
    tail -f //var/log/apache2/error_log

(adapt path as needed for your precise system !!! )

that shows you problems if any
usually the error output is clear enough to find solution
else google using error messages displayed - such as

login as root server unexpectedly closed network connection

    good luck
