Directory submission is a thing of the past where SEO is concerned. Content is a Superhero nowadays. Well written, original content is worth 1000 directory submissions... don't you think?

    Dear 1associate,
You don't read the post carefully. The question is about how many kinds of directories there are? Not about it effective or not :p

The reason you're confused because you're trying to bring together 2 separate issues.
Directories submissions have nothing to do with SEO.
Lets talk about SEO - Search Engine Optimization.
It says Search Engines and not Directories Optimization thus you cannot optimize them.

Only directories owners can optimize their content and if you lucky enough and your
submission get edited, then it will be edited in form and shape suitable to what that
directory owner thinks is the best way to present his directory to Search Engines.
All you can do is to submit your site and hope that directory has been crawled regularly
and your link eventually will appear in SE Index with properly edited title and description.

Just remember that SE will show title and description of you site in that directory and that
means that you can effectively Optimize only your own site and not somebody else.

LOL, who made you an expert?
Can you provide any proof to justify your "hearsay" statement?

I think you are real Einstein boss because you are trying to prove your theory of SEO here. The question was simple and innocent if our friend don't have an idea or having some problem we have to solve it rather than explaining the theory.
And please don't underestimate people. Stop spreading negative thoughts.......

    Theory?
Wrong poppy, this is not just a theory but proven facts but... you wouldn't know.

What kind of problems? I don't see any problems OP has in his post.
I can see him looking for information and truth

Now we know you can make fart noises with your mouth, why don't you "people"
spread something positive around and come up with your ingenious solution?

alsatech, most people don't understand the nuances between SEO and SEM. For years, SEO referred to everything we do to get our sites ranking well. It's only the past few years that the so-called experts felt the need to redefine the term.

You certainly can help a directory with their own content and SEO. Since so many directory owners do not rewrite descriptions, I often submit descriptions that I believe will enhance the ranking of the category and page my listing will appear on. I will gladly help a directory rank for secondary or tertiary terms. The better that page/category can rank, the more useful the backlink becomes to me. But, that is not what the OP is talking about here.

    To answer the original question...

There are three types of directories...

Link Directories, Article Directories and Socially-driven article/blog directories (Digg, StumbleUpon, etc.)

Four types if you include Bidding Directories separately.

Within each of those are a number of variations relating to payment, reciprocal link requirements and features.

So, what's wrong with my attempt to educate novices and to introduce them to correct terminology?

No, you can't, not with keywords stuffed titles and descriptions 99.99999% of spam infested submissions.

Congratulation, you're belong to 0.00001% of knowledgeable public that doesn't spam directories but
it's still not optimization simply because the owner can change what you had submitted, which, as I said,
only something that you had published in your own blog, forum etc. and cannot be changed by others
    will optimize Search Engines.

But again, it's up to directory owner how he/she optimizes categories using good page title and meta description
and of course general content because in the end of the day even category page without links can be placed high
in SERP if that page well optimized. Which brings me back to where I have started: you can't optimize other sites.

Directories serve the need of finding information in their websites which has lot amount of categories in them to let users submit their relevant content in niche and most appropriate categories according to the user.
