How many Towns in the Unites States?

I'm building my Regional directory using the built in regional function of the phpLynx script which has a built in ability to switch from being a general directory to a regional one, from Country, City, or town, even street I suppose, and am just about to hand build a towns database.

Does anyone know how many towns in the USA please? I'm not after an existing database, at least not yet, I'm only wanting to know how many towns there are to see how long it takes me.

I believe this to be one of the best resources:
    http://www.city-data.com/
It's more if you count the small ones (pretty sure of that anyway)

Plenty! In New Jersey, for example, there are 566 municipalities, but you really should consider adding in those towns with communities within them.

Let us know what you come up with -- there must be 20-30,000 plus communities across the USA.

I think wiki is a nice resource as well, if you search the right term you can get all the results structured

Thanks Matt, will be probably revert to importing the majors down to municiples and then go for building the town structures so it will only take me 1 year instead of the 2 choice thinks its gonna take me. :p

Pheonix you might do a few searches and find some freely available .csv formatted files that list all the states/cities etc. and just import it into the DB.

If not, there are a several sites that sell that information in just about any format you want (csv/sql/mysql/txt). A year or so ago I did a site that needed all states and cities...I may still ahve that csv file laying around in a folder somewhere if you need it.
