How Many Times Have You Clicked Your Own Ads?

    Relax. :D

I am talking about clicking on them accidentally. I know after doing an update on my site, i'll scrolll quickly on my on the updated page to see if the changes took and sometimes i'll accidentally click on my own ad. It's happened about 3-5 times in the 6 months i've been with Google. Mind you, it's a very small amount of my total clicks, but thought it would be interesting to find out how many times other adsensers have done the same...

After all the horror stories of people getting booted out of the adsense program for clicking on their own ads, I decided to block Adsense ads from showing up on my end by modifying a file on my computer. That way, I won't even see the ads to accidentally click on. A side effect of this is that I don't skew the number of impressions that I'm getting on my sites by viewing them myself.

The downside of this? I don't see ANY adsense ads.

Oh, and to answer your original question, I haven't accidentally clicked on my ads :)

I have seen ads on my sites that I wanted to visit. I have gone as far as just typing the URL in directly to check the product out.

I accidently clicked on the ads on one of my sites.. I was extremely tired at the time and doing some work and just mis-clicked.. I did send off an e-mail to let them know about it.... That was a while ago though.

I block all my ads now with my hosts file because it is easy to turn them back on when I need to see them.. but with new sites my activity can skew my impression numbers, so I find it easier to just block them.

I haven't clicked on any of the ads on my site - it's just too risky. What I'd be interested to know though is if anyone here 'accidentally' clicks the ads on their site when using the office computer, a friend's computer or if you're at an internet cafe? Hmm...

NEVAR!!! clicked own ads, i have blocked them via conditionals in the code on my site.

Sure i could just use the hosts file, but i kinda like being able to see adsense ads on other sites, to check out placements, colors and keywords.

If you want to block Adsense ads in your HOSTS files, here is how you do it:

    1) Open your HOSTS file with Notepad. Your HOSTS file is found in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC directory for Windows XP, the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC for Windows 2000, and the C:\WINDOWS directory for 98/ME.

    2) Add the following line right below the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line: "127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com" (just what is between the quotes).

    3) Save your HOSTS file, remember not to change the name or file extension or you could run into problems.

This is about the most foolproof way to stop yourself from clicking on your ads. Remember though, you will be blocking ALL Adsense ads, not just your own.

    Hope this helps :D

if your on a network just run a proxy that filters the ads out at the gateway. You can be sure then that this "accidental" clicking from you or one of your employees will never happen.

    I highly recomend using privoxy

Thanks, did it, now my kids can visit my site.

Just to add: you must reboot for it to take effect.

Yeah as shoemoney mentioned privoxy is good... and dkbtech showed the hosts file needed no worries here.

For Yahoo, Chitika and Adsense I have the following 3 lines in my host file:

(I don't use a proxy right now because I am only worried about myself and I can toggle the host file as quickly as I can a proxy in most cases)

    127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com
    127.0.0.1 ypn-js.overture.com
    127.0.0.1	scripts.chitika.net
    Code (markup):

That's good info on the host files, I may have to do that when I get bigger. I also wanted to mention that the 4-5 times I have accidentally (really!) clicked on my own ad, that I never sent an email off to Google. I wonder if there is an internal Google site legitamacy ranking that use Adsense, as in the amount of time one has been a Adsense customer, how long the site has been online etc etc...
