I just wanted to discuss this with somebody who knows, and to correct me if I am wrong.

Question : How do you check how many other websites are competing for the same keyword ?

My understanding is that you put "keyword" and google it, is this the right way ?

Any comment very much appreciated !

yes, that's the way. Whether or not they are actively competing or that phrase just happens to be in their content - those are the folks you are going against.

I would suggest that you also look at the results of the Google searches returned with the following operators:-

    allintitle:
    allinurl:
    allinanchor:

These advanced searches can often help you differentiate between the keyword being targeted by a site and it being used incidentally.

You just need to know who is your current competitor for the keyword. No need to know whether it is willful or willless.
