Is there a way to tell how many sites are being hosted on the same machine as my sites? I've been noticing some slow down with my sites and I'd like to monitor what my host is doing... Thanks!
Yea there is, I found a tool but it costs money to use it. Someone might have a free tool, it's be useful.
An odd suggestion, but maybe ask your host? If they're honest, they'll tell you. If they're not, then you've got problems.... but if you do ask you might address the slowdown issue to give them some context as to why you're asking - i know i would want to know if one of my machines was slowing down. I always opt for the simplest, most direct option first. Just ask them, can't hurt to try. VG
webhosting.info provides a free reverse dns lookup showing you exactly how many and which sites are on your server. whois.sc only returns so many results for free now.
This will show per your IP, there may be multiple IP's used for hosting though. Will give you a ballpark figure though.
First, keep in mind that based on how your DNS is setup and servers configured those tools don't always provide accurate results. (As ServerUnion just said those tools are based on a single IP, not a single server as a server can have several IPs.) Second, even by knowing how many other sites are on the same server doesn't give you enough information to determine if that is what is causing the slowdown. If there are five sites on the same server and one of them is getting high loads of traffic that could bring you down. Likewise if the server has five hundred low traffic websites running on it you still don't know if it is a server load problem or perhaps something else like a DNS issue, upstream bandwidth issue, router failing somewhere in the nework, etc. The bottom line is that your question will not be answered by knowing how many sites are running on the same server. You need to work with your host to determine the problem and if the problem cannot be located think about moving to a different host.
On average you will have 5-8 Ips on each server. the tool will show only sites sharing the IP. Best bet is ask your host. You shouldn't be concerned about number of sites in the server. its the load that matters. If you single site like this forum on the server, that would eat up more resources than 1000 static sites. Good luck
yeah i hadn't considered more ips. I have several servers for my own sites, plus a few design clients, but all of them share one ip on each server apart from sites who use a dedicated ip for ssl etc. But a hosting company divides clients up into ips then? and not just puts clients who need a dedicated ip on their own and the rest on the same ip like i do?
Not necessarily. There are probably a lot of different ways to do it. On my servers everyone who needs their own IP (for things like SSL) obviously gets their own. Then everyone who wants their own IP (just because they do) gets their own IP. And then everyone else (i.e. all other clients and sites) get a single IP. That is just the way I've decided to do it.
that's basically how i do it, but with my own sites ofcourse. In that scenario doing a reverse dns lookup on the "common" ip would give a fairly approximate estimate of the number of sites on a server, becuase the sites with their own ip aren't going to number in the hundreds, if you're at EV1 you only get 32 anyway per server
