Personally I believe actual number of results plays a very small part is trying to figure out the actual competitiveness of a word. There are something like 10-15 factors that determine it.

Randfish has a great tool which can assess this

Yep. http://www.seo-scoop.com/direct_link.cfm?thepost=205 That is a rather old post by DD. This tool has been re-developed by Matt with a whole new interface, extra analysis of search data etc. It is worth trying... :D

I used this tool for a VERY competitive keyword and it took 06 minutes, 46 seconds. It is worth it in my opinion.

Wanna try again but the tool says i have a report still running, so it´s impossible to run another one.

Sorry about that, gang. It should be fixed and ready to run now - we've been regularly running 200+ per day with 90-95% working flawlessly. However, today, Alexa's API interface has been going wacko, so that could be a problem. Hopefully they'll have it fixed soon.

I really don't think that there should be a limit to which terms you are going for. You can set your goals as high as you want. While you are reaching for it, you are most likely going to start ranking for many targeted smaller terms. I think that it's a good idea to focus long term and just go for it.
Set a goal and start building. If you do things right and keep at it, you may be surprised one day over what you actually are able to rank for.

IMHO start by a longer keyword with less competition. And after gaining much needed experience and ranking, you can try those more competitive ones.

That is what I am doing now :p
