or you could just display an extract of each post with a read more link. i don't think its a very good idea to display the post in its entirity on the homepage. just give the visitor a teaser and they can click on the article to read more if they are interested.

I'll go for at least 5 posts on home page. If you don't have duplicate content on your blog then you can display 5-10 posts on home page.

Been gone for a week, back to it now...

Yes. My first thought was that you had made the page layout wider. I want to keep this on topic, so I'll PM the details.

Back to the number of posts per page, I second kev's post with post length affecting how many you display. If you have long posts, I don't think I would want to many displayed at once or you'll have a page that is a mile long. I still think it is a better idea to show an excerpt of the post and have people visit the post's individual page for the full story, which also cuts down duplicate content.

I also agree that pictures, videos, and any other non-text objects are definitely something to consider when choosing how many posts to show. The more of these there are, the longer it will take to load. Remember, all that stuff has to start loading before your sidebar even begins to load. I once made the mistake of having tutorial videos in all the frontpage posts, displaying the default ten, and inadvertently, they all loaded at once, bring my internet to a slow drag as they all loaded.

It depends on the length of your sidebar :D

The longer the sidebar, the more posts I put on my blogs page.

depends on the quality of the text! On high qualitiy sites I put only one or two a day on it - on blogs with lower quality up to ten. And on fridays more so that the people have something to read over the weekend.

I would probably just put 4 posts on the home page. To many and it will start to look clustered

I've been lowering mine gradually since asking this question. I find my load times still seem to be too long for my liking, but the blog seems to look good to me at least.

I personally like to keep about 7 or so... Generally - depending on theme(as it doesn't look good on magazine themes) but I like to have 1 full post, and the rest excerpts. Magazine themes, I will use 1 featured, longer post (but still excerpt), I've heard it's better for seo, as well as adsense clicks to use excerpts. I'd also recommend using a thumbnail plugin so that there's a thumbnail for each post, it look's tight, and 90% of your posts should have an image in. If you don't have images, use Zemanta or flickr to find some.

I have some pretty beefy articles of about 500 to 750 words so any more then 2 of those is a bit much for people to get through so I am going to switch to the good old read more method and go for 10 posts. I don't think there is any hard and fast rule just comes down to personal preference
