How many posts should index page contain?

Just curious how many posts should main page contain. I've seen different styles. Very many posts and just 5 or less. I have 3 on the main page.

Does it make any sense for SE or what?
So, how many?

 

Between 5 to 10 should be a good number.

 

think about it this way, the least amount of posts on a page will lead to readers going through more pages...Which in turn can be good for you with adsense and such...I use 5 myself...I say it also depends on how often you update the site and with how many posts...Say you update it each day with maybe 2-3 posts a day. I would say about 5-6 posts would be good for the main page...If your only making 1 post were day im gonna say about 3 posts for the front page is good, this way you dont have posts on your first page that you wrote over a week ago, that will show to readers you dont update often.

 

I'd say so it's slightly longer then your sidebar. Shorter looks lame and much longer is a waste. How will someone convert if there are no ads NOTHING next to the bloggeries.

 

10 is best number.

 

you know, i tried to use "as long as the sidebar" full of thumb, but in my experience it doesnt work well that way....It all depends on your posts, how they are laid out, how long they are, if you add a picture or add within the post before the except and etc...For example i usually include say a 550x400 or whatever photo above any of the text in a post...If i only left the index page to display posts just as long as the sidebar that would mean i would only be displaying 3 posts...Unless i load my sidebar up with tons of content to annoy readers....

Its all going to come down to the site at hand pretty much, everybody will be different...if you wanna post up your link im sure we will be glad to check it out and make a suggestion based on the layout of the site..

 

Id say around 10.

I'm thinking to show 2 more posts. It will be five and will be longer that right sidebar.
I don't want to make it as long as Chinese Great Wall, so 10 posts I suppose will be too much, but it could be good for SE and what about readers))

Upto 10 is better, but depends how frequently you adding new..if 4-5 a week then you should set it to 10, if less 5-7

 

i currently use a custom index/homepage, however on my archive/category pages i use between 6-10.
