I think most of the people who bag Google are wannabe webmasters who don't make enough money out of Google and have a chip on their shoulder about it. They're like those floating voters in elections with no real convictions of their own, following the herd to knock the current leader off the top just because they're there or because everyone else says they should.

What they don't understand is they're not getting very far because they're losers. They don't have the brain power to succeed as individuals so it wouldn't make any difference if Google, Microsoft, Yahoo or someone else were at the top - they'd still be shouting for blood and hoping they would die.

So, it would be/is good for Google et all to have competition, keeps them fresh and active, but it makes little difference to the successes and failures of the little weboid with the imagination of a trailer park's blueprints.

LoL -- Does that include the FTC? the Department of Justice? UK's prime minister? The Data Inspectorate of Norway? Those are after all, brainless, trailer trash living, wannabe loser weboid webmasters for sure -- right? <rolling eyes>

Sorry to be the one to tell you, but judging by the tone of your post, you're the only one with a chip on your shoulder. Chip on, d00d. The rest of us will watch, learn, comment, and debate about what the future holds for the likes of Google -- as we have every right to.

It does not. None of them are out to "bag Google" as stated. They are only doing their job of monitoring Google's efforts to make sure they abide by the law. All large companies receive the same attention. No actions have been brought against them, no anti-trust complaints have been filed, and they have done nothing illegal.

I'll repeat what another poster said to you and ask, "Are you insane?" Google has done nothing illegal? Buddy, load up the search engine you love so much and look for lawsuits against google. This is getting ridiculous.

Load up a dictionary and learn the difference between a criminal or civil action and a lawsuit. It's one thing to talk about the FTC, et al, and another to talk about lawsuits about the daily life of a business. You're bucking up against a strawman argument so stay on topic.

I think these google die-hards think anyone who disagrees with google's activities is a hater when nothing could be further from the truth. We're simply commenting!

It's absolute extremism to the max!! And weird behavior for sure!

Competition is good for the end users, Google is big because at the moment they are the best.

Everything they touch turns to gold and users just like the way their products/services work. When someone else comes along and starts doing something better, I'm sure that people will start paying attention and start using those products/services.

Google, as every smart company, leverages their market share and popular opinion to their advantage and that's ok because it took a long time and a lot of good products to get them there. It is entirely possible to make money online without being in G's good books, it's just a little harder. In general though, genuinely good websites and online service providers will eventually float up to the top of Google's serps for their respective terms and enjoy the traffic... for those that want to flood the net with spam sites, scraper sites and thin affiliate sites, they'll just have to work a little harder at it (but it's still possible to do good even with a low quality website).

What's the big deal anyway? If SEO and building great websites was easy, everyone would be doing it and we'd be complaining about something else. ;)

I'm not so sure about that. I think they've delved into some unethical strategies as well -- strategies that would put anyone rich enough at the top --- strategies that would position anyone rich enough to settle when those strategies are exposed.

I'm really watching the mess they pulled with their books program. I received a letter from them the other day explaining my rights in regards to their author settlement case. All of which could have been avoided had they simply sought permission first.

Microsoft has taught them well it seems.

It's funny that when some people reach the end of their abilities, they brand everyone a "hater" so it's interesting you brand yourself as that. I don't. I just think your logic is all wrong.

Auletta from The New Yorker, in his new book about Google, says both Microsoft and Google are equally aggressive in the market. The difference, he says, is Google wants to win in the marketplace while Microsoft wants to kill their competitors, put them out of business, and relish in the thrill of it.

I think competing with google in this way is wrong. as they are specialized in what they work...and what they want.
but Microsoft i think is just thinking of it's popularity...and that's why they think they should be first in anything..and that's wrong idea.
people do not pay attention to your popularity just..they will see your work also.
so as Windows in this decade never competed with other similar products.
the google originality never competed with others which are trying to do some thing same to them.
Try some thing unique will in Any case make you unique and will have unique People attracted to your site.

so its' better to Microsoft to work on it's work not trying to be something that is not or still not....

Oh, I don't doubt the fact that they play dirty... in fact I have good friends who have been jerked around by the big G so I have no illusions. Of course the problems (at least for the people I'm close to) have always arisen when dealing with adwords or adsense (ie. G's bread and butter). As far as those networks are concerned, if there is someone willing to spend more in your market, you can expect to see your campaigns struggle, serps go crazy and whatever it takes to make the biggest bidder happy.

Perhaps I'm wrong? Everything we say here is simply speculation but at the end of the day, G makes money by keeping secrets:

    - ranking algos
    - ad bids (publishers will never know what ads actually cost or what niche pays most)
    - data they gather on EVERYTHING
    - ???

But people (and I'm not talking about webmasters and internet marketers) love them... "just google it" is a phrase I hear on a daily basis.

That type of market share and user loyalty is difficult to shake.

I definitely think Google needs competition. I personally hate and love Google all in the same breathe, but I have to wonder this late in the game if there can ever be a real competitor to Google.

YES, we need something besides Google, I am growing weary of all the control they have over how I work online to bring traffic to my site. I am not making enough money to make it worth following all the rules. There has to be something better come along to save the net, cause this is not working lol

YouTube :) (That's right folks, YouYube has more search's daily than Yahoo!)

I will repeat what I said before, no-one can do Google better than Google can. It's like Intel(ignore AMD who have cross-patent agreement) or Microsoft, these companies spend billions of dollars a year making their service the best and it works.

For any company to compete with them not only would they have to deal with decade's worth of investment, expertise and branding, but (tens of?) thousands of the worlds best and brightest.

    It's simply not possible.

This doesn't mean Google doesn't have competition though. If I want to find out about computer prices I use Staticice.com.au, if I want to know about a specific topic I used Wikipedia and if I want to know a statistical or numerical trivia I use WolframAlpha.

These all compete with Google, because they offer new and better services in their field. They don't however try to replace Google.

I mean look at Yahoo, it's a completely different experience from Google - its front page is full of data vs's Google's sparse design. Australian Yahoo is called Yahoo 7 because its got some relationship from the Channel 7 (Big free broadcaster).
