I meant what I said. They're trying to buy Yelp. http://bit.ly/5VINom They were after Expedia http://bit.ly/6MzkXH They already bought youtube and Facebook, and they were after twitter earlier this year. Where have you been?

Go look at this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_acquisitions_by_Google and then talk about what doesn't make a monopoly. If it calling these websites "web service companies" makes you feel better, then call them that. It doesn't change the fact that google is gobbling up the internet website by website.

I'm perfectly aware of those but I consider those services and not web sites.
    They did NOT buy Facebook.
You go look up what monopoly is and then we'll talk. Buying up web services NEVER automatically makes one a monopoly. You are being naive. Every large company grows by buying up smaller ones and/or their technology. Has been true forever. But it does not make them a monopoly for doing so.

You could Google this yourself or look at any of the trade magazines but I'll do it for you:
    StatCounter
    NetApps
    Motley Fool
    ComScore on CNET

IMO Google has WAY better and bigger competition in everything it does than M$ - and probably that's why Google products don't suck like M$'s do.

Okay, so you're talking about the search engine market exclusively (which is what this thread is about). I wasn't. It just seems ludicrous to attribute a small lead of one product among an entire line of products as a substantial share of anything. Yahoo -- when compared to Microsoft as a whole -- is tiny and rather insignificant in itself.

I could have twice the market-share in toe nail clippers than Microsoft does. That does not make me qualified to compete with Microsoft!

If you look at my response, you'll see I said they're becoming one. Nobody said they are a monopoly now. But you're right, they won't buy Facebook. Reference link I found was a friggin april fool's joke!! It doesn't matter anyway. You say tomato, I say tomahtoe. You're the one being naive if you think Google isn't on the path of dominating the web. Here's a good introduction to the subject: http://economics.about.com/cs/microeconomics/a/monopoly.htm <-- not an april fool's joke.

I hope Bing can grab a lot of market share. Every company needs a strong competitor, it keeps innovation going and in the end is great for us consumers.

Google simple provides excellent services at low prices (Free for most of us) - and AFAIK don't do anything illegal, questionable or bad.

If people can compete they will, if they can't they won't.

    As they Should:

"This so-called "second request" doesn't mean regulators intend to block Google's AdMob deal. Most other acquisitions that go through this stage end up getting approved.

But the FTC's action shows regulators are watching Google more carefully..."

Exactly. As a company gets bigger, their moves get looked at closer, but that doesn't mean they are doing anything illegal or harmful.

Google is a monopoly. And they tend to push their blogspot pages up in the search results just to get more ad revenue. Serach for any 'conspiracy' theory and you'll see bunch of google blog pages with adsense on it. The content will be totally illogical. I find this practice very unethical.

And I beg to differ the other guy's opinion that 'Google products doesn't suck'....
Maybe he hasn't used Chrome which can't handle more than two tabs lol
