I quit my day job last summer and now work 100% from home working on various websites (I supplement some of that with freelance writing and editing, which used to be my full-time job). So it got me curious as to how many of you guys out there work from home on a regular basis?
The only job I have is online (freelancing website & graphics design.. and some hobby income with adsense). It's only part-time though, I'm a full-time university student... but once I graduate, I shall quit my freelancing business and expand my adsense network
Well I don't know if you call this working from home.. but instead of working at home.. I opened an office and got myself 5 employees working on my Adsense network.
I've never had a "real job" (offline) before too but I tried to get a real job at some food place before.. (at minimum wage) and I ended up quitting 3 weeks after. It's kind of funny because I actually "lost money" when working with the real job. Working at home is the best IMO
Hah! It's amazing isn't it, how much money you can make online as opposed to minimum wage at a fast food joint? If I were born 10 years later or so, I probably would've been all over a site like this when I was in college, and jumped right into my own website business. Instead I took the hard road and had a few jobs in the real world (mostly publishing industry, but a couple years at a dot.com). As for Franklin's question... yeah, it's working for me great so far. Before, I had a 9 to 5 job (though it was more like 9 to 6:30 or 7 depending on the week... I was in magazine publishing so deadlines kept creeping up every month) and then I spent my free hours at night just freelancing (both online and offline). It got to the point where I was making a nice chunk of change freelancing but if I wanted to really take it to the next level, I ahd to quit my day job. So I took a chance and went for it. I've been doing great and actually cut back on freelance writing/editing to concentrate even more on the Web end. Best part is no commuting (unless you count the stairs) and I get to see my wife and kids all day. Worst part is health insurance. We pay 100% right now which certainly ain't cheap. Especially for a family of 4... How's it working for you, Franklin?
Well I had a job were I used to make good money but I got sick of it (specially from dealing with people who just want to take advantage of you). so I couldn't really tell you since it't been only a couple of months, it's been actually kind of slow. I design websites and repair computers and to be honest it's been a little hard for me, I am not married but I have to pay rent and bils and all that stuff plus I go to school and that's expensive. I really don't want to give up on this because it is what I like as a matter of fact I love doindg what I do. I'd like to register a company and have peole work for me in the future. I'ts been an adventure and sometimes I feel like I shouldn't have done it but after all it is what I wanted so I'll keep doing it 'til I get where I want. In conclucion I am pretty much new to this kind of life. I like the freedom it gives you but I must admit there's just so much I need to learn. Any advice will be welcome. Why not? see you around Pitfallharry cheers
But you know when I close my office.. I come home and continue my work... It's nice to work at home... sitting in your PJ's... and Dping..
Wow, a lot more folks then I thought do work from home. It's funny, I work full time at my home office now and yeah a little bit at night, but now that I do all my formerly freelance work during the day, my nights are fairly free to actually... gasp... spend time with my wife! I dont' think I've watched as much TV or played as many video games as I have the past few months in a loong loong time. But as for advice, I'm learning too and would love any tips from anyone out there. I'm finding that message boards are great for a few things. One, they can give you some great information when you need it. (Particularly in terms of coding.) And second, they can help keep you sane by giving you "some" form of interaction. That was the hardest adjustment for me, going from a big office with constant interaction of co-workers, to basically nobody but me.
only while I'm finishing my masters...I am getting a real job once graduate....tired of just making a little, I want a ferrari...
Working at home here too. My daughter is convinced that part of the job of being a mommy is working on the computer.
Spent April to December of last year learning and getting started, and I've been working full-time at home since January
