Interesting feedback. We've talked with a few SEO firms... the reputable ones charge about $1k/mo, which is fair if they can deliver results. The problem for us is that we've already invested considerable time/effort to optimize our sites using in house staff... and we've achieved quite good results. So the only thing we'd get from a pro SEO firm is incremental improvement, which I can't say is worth the cost (and they charge the same whether you're starting with a brand new site or your site is already well optimized.)

I do everything myself for my own sites. I work with other people on some client sites (mine and theirs).

For my own sites I honestly can't justify paying somebody when a site isn't bringing in any income yet. It does slow down the process, but I don't think it would be all that much faster with help.

Where I would like to get help in the future is for additional content development on my established sites. I think that would be most helpful and worth the money.

Unfortunatley I have to do everything myself, which isn't effective at all.

Designing the templates certainly takes the most time. But creating content accumatively takes more time... Writing, posting them - adding pictures the works...

awesome thread, nice to see the range in peoples management of there web projects.

I personally do it all, but as soon as i can im going to outsource.

In my experience, the hardest part of any web project is manageing content (source and layout).. Thats the first thing im going to outsource!

At the moment, I do almost everything myself. I'll sometimes out source directory submissions.
As soon as I have the income, I'll outsource as much as I can.
    Graphics - I'm useless
Content - cheap enough to get someone else to write it.
programming - this will stay in house.
link building - easy enough but very time consuming.

I with most of you as a do it all type. I do all my own programming, hosting, server management, marketing and customer service, etc. Takes a LOT out of me because I still have a day job. But hopefully that will all change soon... =)

That is a lot of work. My ideal situation is somebody writes for me. I just sit and collect money from my sites.

100% by myself. It's my project that I'll take into retirement with me next summer.

At that time my wife and I will spend some time camping in our travel trailer on a high bluff on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, overlooking beautiful Cook Inlet. There I'll work on new pages on my laptop. Then we'll occasionally find an internet cafe, where I'll upload the new pages.

They say that keeping your mind active in one's senior years is important. So that's my plan to keep my brain cells healthy. Fortunately, the user-friendly Mac and my Freeway Express software allow a web-design amateur like me to be a one-person website creator and writer, webmaster, SEO "expert," etc.

And I'll say it again -- thanks to all who have offered so much helpful advice.

It looks like most everyone is in the same boat here! I used to do 100% everything myself which is A LOT since I have 2 online stores, an ebay store, 3 blogs and a dozen projects. So not only was I doing the standards: site design, content, seo, marketing, etc. I was also doing customer service, invoicing, accounting, shipping and receiving product, buying, etc. Now, there is no way that it is humanly possible for me to do it all, so I've hired an employee who is currently doing invoicing and shipping. It's tough letting go, but you have to at some point ;)!

If there's something I can't do, then I don't do it. I've never hired someone else to do any aspect of the process from design to publicizing. That's probably the reason why I'm not too successful at this webmaster thing.

I wear all the hats for my sites too. From site design, coding, in-house hosting, customer service, etc, etc. It definately keeps me out of trouble - on second thought it gets me into trouble because sometimes I don't know what I am doing and I have to learn on the fly.

Doing everything myself has taught me alot about all aspects of the business. Utimately, I hope to be in to position like ViciousSummer to hire some help.
