I am just curious to know about DP members.
If you are self-servers then what are your system/server and internet connection specifications?

I'm both, sometimes a self-server, sometimes my wife serves me.

    Shared hosting here.
Self serving here in South Africa would be suicide on so many levels..

I do both actually. Up untill the last 2 months I was only on a shared hosting setup. For the last almost 2 years is has been rock solid - perfect. However recently they added an adaptive firewall that I have bumped heads with more than once.

Since that hosting has been so damn good to me and CHEAP, I kept that account but everything new has gone onto a shiny new VPS hosting account. It is semi-managed I guess you would call it, but I have full and complete access to destroy it at will :D but I can also contact the NOC for help. They also handle OS and core software maintaince.

I have Linux administration expricence so it has been no trouble at all with it and the flexiblity is really nice.

Agree with the above root comment :)

    haha

self server also, the lower price of a shared server doesn't justify the risk of someone else on that server buggering things up for you, from something as simple as an exploited form processor balcklisting the IP to an unpatched script allowing access to the server, plus my sites use up way to much resources to be in a shared environment anyway :)

    What's your definition of

    I am self server
    and
I rely on other's remote servers

Both of those can be your answer if you have a dedicated server. Have the server in your own home and host it yourself (Self server), or have your own dedicated server hosted at a hosting company like ev1, while you rely on other's remote servers at the same time you have a dedicated server that's just as good, if not better.

Although I basically agree with you, not all shared hosting is the same. In my case they managed resource hogging extremely well. They also give you an unique IP address for each domain. For smaller websites shared hosting can work out very well with a good provider.

Currently my VPS is through ServInt. 2 months and it has been smooth sailing. Although my shared hosting was great (excepting the noted firewall issues) the VPS is more consistent as far as site responsiveness goes.

And you can have your own self server even if it's 1,000 miles away at a web hosting company. It's called a dedicated server at ev1server.net!!!!!

So what's ur definition of your own dedicated server 1,000 miles away that you manage yourself!!!! Ur poll makes it look like having your own dedicated server iz a no-no!!!! Bad boy, bad!!!!

Gah!!! So what's a 'I rely on other's remote servers' when you have your own dedicated server 1,000 miles away!! That poll looks like having your own dedicated server = stigma, ie rely on some one else!!

Dedicated servers are great where ever they are, unless it's a bad server!!!! :D

You should of added a 'hosted dedicated server' option to da poll!!!! :D

    Ah Cell phone999, I know, I'm annoying!!! :D:D

But I really want to vote. :( But I can't since I am self server (dedicated server) and also rely on other's remote servers (It's over in Texas, ev1servers.)
