There is no recommended limit.Using proper SEO strategy, you can get good SERP positions. But there are talks about advantages of having a proper content-rich site. But if you are picking a broad niche then it is obvious that writing more articles focused on a lot of keywords would bring in lots of targeted visitors. You would be amazed at the number of long tail traffic you get once you focus on content.

Even one page would work if you are good at SEO... I've seen many onepage LP's ranking good on Google

It's not a matter of how many pages are required for good SEO on YOUR SITE. Each page is judged independently. This is why one page sites can outrank sites with multiple pages.

You first need to make sure that your on-page SEO is done properly. Once you've done that, you need to work on your off-page SEO.

Then depending on the level of competition and how well your competition has optimized their page, your ranking will be determined.

    Best,

    Michael

I would say that whats on the pages is more important, i have a website that only has about 6 pages, because thats all thats needed for that site.

All of the pages on your site have a PR of their own and the PR is passed out among the other pages. So, the lower pages, outbound links with nofollow attribute you have the higher your PR will be and thus high-ranking your pages in SERPS.

A good point, my little 6 page site has PR on all of the pages.

I cant say the same for my larger sites.

I recently saw that Google is getting rid of Page Rank with the Webmaster Tools and more importantly, has expressed that you shouldn't be focusing on Page Rank.

I'm not implying that I know much about this, but here is a link to an article regarding this issue:

http://www.webpronews.com/topnews/2009/10/15/google-ditches-pagerank-in-webmaster-tools (would've made the link live, but I'm not permitted yet... just copy and paste the link in your browser or somebody else can make the link live) ;)

    Best,

    Michael
