When it comes to creating a web site do I have this portion right?

    1) create a main keyword phrase
    2) create a list of other keywords that are relevant to the main title
    3) create pages based on those other keywords?

    thanks

    Bravo.

You should find keyword phrase with which you can fight for better SERP. Then you create similar keyword phrase and optimize other pages with that keyword phrase.

Once you have your niche, do some thorough keyword research to figure out where potential "holes" are in the market. By this I mean, find keywords that a decent number of people search for, but that there is not a lot of competition for.

Very good advice... Quality keyword development is about going where the competition isn't.

Go long... As in long tail, which is a string of 3 or more related keyword. The longer the tail the more targeted the traffic and the better your chances of you obtaining high search rankings.

Here is a few examples of long tails.

    Plastic Media Blasting Equipment
    Tucson Search Engine Optimization
    Denver House Cleaning Service

    Good luck!
