As long as your link exchange site is quality site and in your niche, then you have no problem at all

Actually, the answer is NONE. Google does not consider link exchanges to be a viable method of promotion. In fact, when they see that you are exchanging links with antother site, the backlinks you get from then are discounted. In other words, they provide very little SEO benefit.

What you want to do is get other sites to link to yours *without* having to link back in return. You do this by providing useful, unique content nad giving other people something to talk about.

Google doesn't consider link exchanges spam, but they do consider it a method of trying to artificially inflate the search engine rankings of your site. They don't 'penalize' you for such links, but they do discount the backlinks to the point where it doesn't help much either.

google dont want people exchanging links, it is in their eyes meant to be a natural process. Exchanging for cash is spamming in their eyes

Interesting. Did google just start discrediting link exchanges or have they always done that?

    1) Link exchange is not a good way to make backlinks for your website. I dont rcommend it.
    2) I guess yes. As Google doesn't like link exchange maybe they penalize your website if you do it a lot.

Link Exchange is the ideal tool for building link exchanges the way Google likes... grow your link exchanges gradually and gain links from many different sites.

Right lekhraj, but isn't relevancy an issue? If google takes note that you're just shooting links into spam farms then what happens? I hear they are vigilant about SEO doctoring/molestation.

You want to try to get links 'FROM' other sites. Not 'shooting links into'.

Relevancy is important, but it's more of a 'effect' than a 'cause'. This is because if you are trying to get your valuable content out in front of people that might be interested, like you should be, then getting links from relevant sites should be the result.

    Absolutely absurd.

Google specifically tells you NOT to exchange links. When they find that you have exchanged links, they DE-VALUE the backlink.
