Hi everyone. I've lurked around these forums for a while, but this is my first post.

First off, let me begin by saying that I'm new to web design/SEO, and I have gotten lots of useful information from these forums. So, Thank you for a great resource!

    Here is my question:

I am designing my first real website. After much thought, I have decided to use simple text links to other parts of the site(ie. www.domain/subdomain), as opposed to using menus.

The problem is that I may end up with over 100 links on the main page, with very little actual material..

I am worried that this approach may end up getting my site penalized in google...

So, how many links are too many?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hi and welcome! Try to keep no more than 100 links. As far as I know Google will not follow more than 100.

This seems a very strange way of creating a website!
Why not have a few subpages (say 5 or 6) then 20 links off each of those?

I would agree with Deano and the others (partly) re limiting the number of links from each. I think it's definitely good practice to do so.

Re Google, I am not sure whether or not Google would follow more than 100 outbound (External) links or not, but I think Google should (imo) follow all internal links even if they are over 100. If you have a look at websites such as Yahoo or MSN, they have a huge number of internal links from most pages so as long as you are not linking to a high number of other websites, you should be ok.

You'll need to add actual content to the main page rather than it containing of only links. Use links for navigation purpose so that when someone clicks on them, they can see the content of other pages.

Yep you will be asking for trouble like that. Chances are you will be hit with a penalty of some sort.

Definately divide it up into smaller sub topics and work from there. Will give you more pages of content that you can add to as well.

Well I also agree, and would like to add what is the use of adding 100 links to your main page... Just think you are building a website for a visitor... when he sees 100's of links on the main page he would feel confused where to start first... and may not find the thing that YOU want him to find... ofcourse the product page... well i hope that is the page you want your visitors to land after coming to your website...

Well just give a rethink to your startegy and design a user friendly website.

    Take care
