How many times should my keywords show up in a page of my site? Also, what context should the keywords be put in?

I asked the same question when I was optimising my sites for the first time. I was told you only need to display it a few times.

Actually I don't measure the density of keywords within the page as long as the content is readable and useful to your visitors or reader.

Aaron Wall has spoken about this quite a bit over at SEOBook, and it is the general consensus that whilst you should think about meta tag optimisation prior to building your site rather than after, you certainly shouldnt aim to create pages which are high in key word density just for the sake of it.

The amount of keywords that you have in your meta tag has always been widely debated, and whilst I have 80 in my meta tag, popular SEO sites like RankQuest advise that due to search engine indexing practices, you should only use about 20 keywords specific to each page.

My advise to anyone would be to create unique web pages built for your users, not for keywords. Once you have a rough idea of what the site is about, you can then use the Google Adwords keyword suggestion tool (or something similar), and use the most popular words relevant to your site, and add your own keywords for your niche. There are even some tools which will go through your content and pick the keywords for you.

If all else fails, just search successful competitor sites and take a few pointers from their code. But, remember... traffic doesnt just come from search outcomes, it also comes from word of mouth, good marketing and back links. Just because you are indexed properly and have relevant keywords to help find your site doesnt mean your site is trusted, that comes one click at a time. I hope that helps =).
