Meta tags are rarely used anymore however there isn't a set amount of keywords you should have. Just put the ones you need in the meta tag rather than stuffing it full.

There's no specific number is needed as long as it will not surpass the 150 characters limit, just put the keywords you think competitive and really descriptive to your niche.

Meta Keyword Tag now less to no important in the SEO (what I heard Google & Bing totally ignore it, when Yahoo still count it as related term).

Just use few of them to roughly describe about your site.

I normally include the target keyword and broad keyword to just tell the search engine bot what is my site about.

For example ... if my keyword is "Nikon Compact Camera"

I will add keyword like "nikon camera", "digital camera", "compact camera", "digital compact camera".... that's it what I will do.

The trick is ... you can just do search with your keyword. and you can either use the wonder wheel or related search from the Google itself as your keyword :)

A smart and optimized content contains the right balance of the keywords used throughout the content. Usually it should be 5% to 6%.
    * Use two to three keywords in the whole content.
    * Start the content with the most important keyword and end it with the same keyword.
