You can have infinite no. of keywords but you need to have different page for each keywords although you can use some set of relevant keywords for a single page. eg. you can have first 4 keyword for home page and one separate page for SEO related keywords. This is good practice to get higher in SERP.

    @ smartyjohn..
sorry dear !!! I can't understand the concept of taking 4 pages of my website targeting to homepage and other may target to their corresponding different pages..
How its going to work as SERP...
Choosing the no. of keywords for a website entirely depends on the project requirement..

If you use more than 5% of the text as keywords in your content then that would be considered as keyword stuffing. Use your keywords wisely and in the right places so that you don't get punished by Google.

    Hi,

I agree you don’t want to optimise a web page for too may phrases as this will only dilute your SEO results. A good idea is to optimise individual pages for different key phases, this is especially useful if your buisness is divided into different sections, or offers different services. By using a single relevant phrase you can optimise each page to its potential.

I'm not going to give you a specific number of keywords to target per page as not only isn't there a set number, but you should be writing your content for your users and not focusing on how you can fit keywords into the content. If you write your content properly you'll find that approximately a handful of popular/semi-popular keywords will be targeted naturally for you with a bunch of long tail keywords sprinkled in, too.
